Ive got a 2006 Ford Expedition and all of a sudden on the interstate in traffic the engine fail safe light came on and I lost power to the vehicle. Thankfully I was at a slow rate of speed and was able to coast to the side of the road. I waited a few minutes and it restarted. It has happened numerous times since but I keep getting told its different issues at the mechanic. Any ideas what might cause this so I don't keep paying for issues that don't get fixed? Thanks for any help.

There are numerous potential causes of the Check Engine light coming on and the engine dying. Fuel pump, fuel pump relay, poor ground, a short in a wire somewhere come to mind. Best bet is to buy a code reader or get an adapter and ForScan and you'll be able to do quite a bit of troubleshooting on your own and provide the smart folks on the Expedition Forum with some useful info to assist you with. You spend far less than 1hr of labor at a shop.

You must have the engine scanned for any stored trouble code(s).

The code(s) will point you in the direction for diagnosis and repair.

Until then, you will be guessing what is wrong.

Things that can cause it to go into limp mode: Over heating, low oil pressure....all I can think of. Either take it to Auto Zone or O'Reilleys and get them to do a free scan, or buy an inexpensive scanner from Amazon and see what codes are present. That should at least point you in the right direction.
