The 4.6 in my ‘03 2-wheel drive Eddie Bauer needs to be replaced. What are the specifics I need to be aware of when searching for a direct replacement engine?

You'll need the casting numbers from the block and heads. You may find those numbers span multiple model years.
There are two different 4.6 2v engines. Romeo and Windsor.
You need to find out which one you have and replace with the same.
