I have an 03 Exp, 5.4 L engine, 126,000 miles. Very hard to start in hot weather and multiple trips to store, etc. Starts fine the first time in the morning. Usually starts in 2-3 tries when hot. Also starts fine right after a fill up with gas. Runs great otherwise, no hesitation, acceleration great. CanOBD2 analyzer did not show anything. Charging check at O'Riley's did not show anything. Friend with several suggestions but I wanted to hear what you guys think. Thanks for your help. CM

My 99 started this also about 6 months ago.
I figured it was a fuel pump or fuel filter.. but I changed the filter out and that didn't stop anything.

I did notice that if I leave the key on for a few seconds before I start it.. it does reduce it..

Curious as well.

You said it is fine after you fill it up with gas? when it does it the most are you at or around 1/4 tank or less? It almost sounds like the fuel pump is getting hot or worn out. With a full tank the pump is completly submerged in the gas which aids in "cooling" the pump, and it also does not have to work as hard to "pick up" the fuel. It could also be the filter sock that is one the pickup of the pump its self inside the tank.

funny you mentioned the fuel being at or below 1/4tank. I had a similar issue this morning! turned key on, started, then right after like 2 seconds of run time it dies.. so i crank it again, same thing. BUT, it now also will run if i feather the gas, but dies at stoplights, and dies if i let off the pedal. any suggestions? I was immediately thinking IAC or MAF

Check the infamouse pcv valve line on the passanger side, the elbows are natoriouse for cracking causing a large vacuum leak. Search the forum you will find many post on the same issue. Hope this helps!
