Hello, I've got a 2005 Expedition, Limited, 5.4. It just turned over 100K a couple days ago. Drove it for some school supplies and came home, parked it for the night. Came out next day to go to a Dr. appt. and it just kept cranking without firing. Let it set for a while, same thing. Attempted to look online through this and other ford sites, but could not find anything. Called a friend whom is a sevice mgr. at a Ford dealer in a near by city. He said the first thing to look at would be the Fuel Pump Driver Module. Its located on the driver side rear frame rail. You shoud be able to see the bracket, it is mounted to when you look in the wheel well. (hopefully attached pics. will show up. It is after I removed the bracket). He said that they are in an aluminum housing and they tend to oxidize and corrode. Its also best to take the bracket off with the module on it, as the two 8mm mounting bolts will most likely be seized in there). Again, if the pictures show up, you should be able to see the corrosion and the hole in the module.
I'm going to replace it, costing $106.88 (plus tax). hoping that it will cure my no start situation. If not, don't know what I'm going to do next. So if anyone has other suggestions, please let me know. other wise I will keep you posted as to what is going on. BTW, the first pic is looking thru the left rear wheel well, at where the bracket and module were mounted. second pic is the actual module and bracket.

Yea, Ford didn't really think that one through; putting aluminum on steel doesn't make for a happy fuel module.

This happens on the F150s as well.

o5 expy cranks but NOW goes

Well, the fuel pump driver module must have been the culprit. She's up and running. Now for my next trick...watch me pull a rabbit outa my hat...
er... i mean change the spark plugs. I've heard horror stories about this one, but I've also read a couple threads saying it wasn't that bad, if I got a few hours.

Just follow the TSB, and it shouldn't be too bad. Have the extraction tool ready, in case you do break any. You can find some on ebay, or just get the Lisle or Rotunda kit. Should be less than 100, and you can resell it after you are done.

I think I posted the link to the newest TSB somewhere here...

Fuel Pump Driver

The fuel pump driver and fuse box went out on my 2006 Expedition. There is a green wire with yellow stripe that sends power from the fuse box by passenger right foot panel to the fuel pump. The connector is on top second over from the right. The green/yellow wire is on the bottom left of this connector.

First check fuse 12 and make sure the fuse is good and has 12 volts. Then check the green/yellow wire and if there is no 12 volts you will need to replace the fuse box. It only takes about 5-10 minutes to replace the fuse box but it cost about $265.00.

Thanks for this thread. I'm sure it saved me hundreds of dollars.

My 2006 Expedition had one start that made me think twice but then ran fine for a 15 min drive. Got gas and wouldn't start. It would sort-of go but the gas pedal did nothing. Finally it started. made one more stop after that and it wouldn't start again. Finally it started and ran fine ... straight to my garage.

In the garage that was it, no more starting.

It would turn over, the tach would show a couple hundred RPM while turning but that was it.

I was pretty sure I didn't hear the fuel pump (but I also think I did, which I might had if it was still sort-of working). I checked spark by pulling a coil and attaching a spark plug to it, had spark. Popped off the fuel rails and checked for a stuck injector or for that matter any spray at all. One little puff of fuel out of one injector and then it was dry.

So I figured fuel pump, not knowing about the fuel pump module.

Searching the net to see if anyone had instructions on fuel pump removal I came across this link for the pump module. Being easy access I checked mine and sure enough, half the back was corroded and missing, what a mess.

The parts store had one and the truck was running again in 20 min.

Cheers,
Mike
