So just as the title says, the truck doesn't go into 4hi or 4lo. No dash lights come on and nothing engages.

When rolling forward if I put it in A4WD I hear some sort of clicking and grinding noise.

What are your guys thoughts?

Most likely the clicking and grinding noise you are hearing is coming from the IWE's Integrated Wheel Ends
You may need to take them apart and clean them and grease them
There is a good video on you tube about the IWE's Also read the attached

But it sounds like your problem is more with the shift motor not engaging on the transfer case. I would start by check the fuses Don't pull them and look at them Test them with a volt meter or test light. You o not need to pull fuse in order to test them.

So I checked fuses F11, F30, and F115 and all looked good. I didn't have a volt meter so I swapped those fuses with like fuses out of location 38(rear wiper), 23(RH low beam), and 107(A/C blower motor).

After switching the fuses, the A4WD doesn't make the grinding noise and the 4hi and 4 lo work just fine. The rear wiper, RH low beam, and A/C blower motor still work as well.

How would you guys explain this?

Simple explanation Bad contact. Take a look at the contact points on the fuse and on the fuse socket. By you removing the fuse its possible you created a better connection when you installed a different fuse.

Now the A4WD is making noise again and the truck won't go into 4HI or 4LO.

Is there a deeper issue than just the fuses that could be causing this? I'm hoping it isn't an expensive repair.

Being that it worked just fine for a little bit when I switched fuses out, it lead me to believe that it isn't the IWE's or the shift motor. Any ideas?

I plugged in a scanner and the C1998 code pulled and it says "check advancetrac" on the dash now. Could this be why the 4x4 isn't working as it should? Advancetrac needs to be recalibrated?
