'13 expedition dropped valve

Hello, just removed valve cover and pulled out valve spring and roller and top of valve stem 5.4 3 valve.
Yikes.
63,000 miles what a poor design.
Microscopic rollers for a V8.
Engine looks brand new inside valve cover except for the mangled roller and valve and gouged cam. So what I've been reading sounds like a very common issue.
Can't wait to pull the head and see what remains of the piston.

The needle bearings in the roller followers fail and if not addressed, lead to further carnage. It's critically important on these engines (5.4 3V) to monitor for any noises that may be out of the ordinary.

It looks like your dropped valve was a result of the follower failing. The follower looks pretty chewed up. I suppose it could have been the result of the piston violently pushing up a valve that was free of it's retainers but not completely out of the guide as well, but many of the top end failures start with the followers.

If I were you I would not be expecting to save the engine, you'll probably need a reman. More likely than not the block is junk if the piston is exploded, or at least, will need more machine work than is cost effective. At a minimum the bore involved would need to be sleeved, if it was salvageable at all. $0.02.
