I justsold my little ricer Toyota pickup last night and am now in the hunt for either a 1997 or 1998 Expedition Eddie 4wd 5.4L. My dad had a 98 expy 5.4 that he put 220,000 miles on before the coil pack F&*ed up and shot the spark plug into the block?... Idk exactly b/c this was when I was about 12yrs old haha. With an estimate of $4200 in repair, he sold the "old" truck.... Waited about a week and got him self a 2003 Expy 5.4, which has 120,000 miles on it. So I feel very strongly about the reliability of these vehicles and want to own one. Now I am looking for a truck exactly like that and am worried about the coil pack failing or it throwing a rod (which happened in my friend's 97 expy 4.6L) Is there anything I should know before I buy one to know if this will happen to mine? or do I just change the oil and take a shot in the dark and hope S@#* dont break??? Help Needed!

take it on a test drive. if it sounds like theres a miss dont buy it. lower the miles the better. but these things can put 300K+ on these rigs. very reliable. and dont worry about spark plug shotting out. if its done right there shouldnt be a problem. the coil packs going out are also a very common issue. it happens a lot. but its better to replace them all if one goes out other wise its like a chain reaction 1 goes and the other and spark plugs if they never been changed either. other than that i would say to get the 5.4 engine. and 4x4 if you can. the 99-02 4wds have a4wd full time. the 97-98 have 2wd too. and dont worry you can lift all years. any questions on what your exactly looking for just let us know.

You should replace the coil packs every 100,000 or so and your spark plugs every 75,000 anyways. Might as well get aftermarket ones while your at it.

Ford expedition xlt questions

I JUST BOUGHT A FORD EXPEDITION XLT WITH 153,000 ON IT. WAS TOLD THERE WAS 78,000 ON REBUILT MOTOR BUT I WAS RIPPED OFF. NOW I HAVE TO MAKE THE BEST OF IT. I LOVE THE TRUCK BUT IS NOW HESITATING AND BUCKING WHILE TRYING TO EXCEL OVER 55, JUST STARTED THIS 2 DAYS AGO. ALSO I HAVE TO CHANGE THE PLUGS, WHAT PLUGS DOES EVERYONE RECOMEND, AND I WANT TO GET NEW COIL PACKS, WAS GOING TO GET EXCELS. BUT SAW 2 DIFFERENT TYPES ON EBAY AND DONT KNOW WHICH I NEED. THERE IS ONE THAT IS SQUARE AND HAS 4 HOLES, AND THERE IS ANOTHER THAT HAS A BARRELL THAT SAYS EXCEL ON IT THAT ALMOST LOOKS LIKE ITS ON THE END OF A SPARK PLUG WIRE, WHICH DO I GET? THE EXCEL ONES ARE HERE........ http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ACCE...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

AND THE OTHERS ARE HERE..... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/coil...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

AND THERE WAS WHITE MILKY MUD UNDER MY OIL CAP LAST WEEK, WIPED IT OFF BUT HAVENT SEEN IT SINCE, HOPING GASKET ISNT GOING, BUT IF IT IS, WHATS THE USUAL PRICE TO CHANGE HEAD GASKET?

It all depends on which motor is in the truck, the 4.6's had coil packs and the 5.4's had coil-on-plugs. Usually the white milky substance under the cap is moisture from cold weather. I know there are several others that have thought the same thing thinking its the head gasket but its not. The only way to find out if there is a head gasket problem, get a compression test done. Accel coils are good for horsepower, you will not get too much of a benefit out of them, if they go bad. Its just like paying a high price for something that does the same thing for cheaper. Hope this helps.

Myself and my brother have used Accel COP'S for our 97 and 2001 Expys and they worked great. We only put motorcraft platinum (oem i think) spark plugs. Also want to make sure that the plugs are torqued to spec.
I paid about $230 shipped to my door. Good prices.
