I'm having problems with this expedition including passenger side lifters tapping really bad,spitting/sputtering/jerking,and no power after engine warms up.Oil pump went out and replaced it.Now the engine is tapping real bad on passenger side.Listening at exhaust pipe, left side of engine is running smooth with no skip or anything, but right side of engine you can hear it skipping and popping and lifters tapping.Could this be due to a collapsed lifter from oil pump going out?Any help on this matter (or any ideas) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.:Frustrated::emotions122::Frustrated::think::banghead:

Do you have a check engine light on? If you do, stop by a local parts store (O'Reilly, Autozone, etc.) and have them pull the codes. Post the codes back here.

The only code it was throwing was P011I3 for the IAT and I replaced it but it didn't make any change in the way the motor runs.

Well these engines are notorious for having a ticking valve. However if you can hear more than one ticking then that is probably not normal. Any chance there are some manifold studs that have broken off of the passenger side manifold?

I've put new timing chains and tensioners, new oil pump, new TPS,new IAT,new vacuum lines and that's it but it didn't start running like this until the oil pump went bad.It has 201,094 miles on it.Oh and I put new o-ring kits on all the fuel injectors.

Sir, I'm no expert, but any chance the timing jumped.

In addition, these are notorious for the pcv valve &/or line to disintegrate due to their location. Sure you checked it, but want to be sure.

I have checked timing 4 different times just to be sure and as far as the PCV valve and line,I forgot to tell you I bought those new from the Ford dealership 2 days and replaced it already.I am at my wits end with this thing and I've been working on cars all my life.

Have you tried unplugging each coil while running to see if the tapping goes away? Was everything in proper working order before oil pump went? How long was the expy running when the oil pump stopped pumping? And you said the issues happen when warm, is everything normal when cold?

Yes I done that while running and the tapping stayed the same.Everything worked good before the oil pump went out and it had a light tapping sound but now it's louder which is understandable since the oil pump died. The tapping I can deal with,it's the sputtering and jerking that I can't deal with.It ran about 2 miles after it went out.And yes the sputtering and jerking happen after the engine is warmed up but all runs good when engine is cold.

Compression check while warm? Also I wonder if a sensor could be causing some of this. Im pretty sure our expys run on open loop entell warm then closed loop relying on O2's, massair and other sensor info for proper operation. also, The engine tapping could be interfering with your knock sensor causing it to run poorly.

I just put my OBD II code reader on it while it was running it gave me a pending code for MAF Input Too Low.As far as any other code it gives me a stored code for SYSTEM TOO LEAN BANK 1.

On my 99 xlt 5.4l. I have a tap on the passenger side that sounds like a valve. I have done allot of listening and looking to find that mine comes not from the valves, but from the first bend on the exhaust manifold. When the engine warms up it will " echo " the sound of the internal pop. Odd.

As far as the bad running. The worst case is that you may have to rebuild that head. Though this idea always causes a problem for me. If I am doing one head, it would be worth while to do the other side, and if the engine had 200,000 plus miles, and is a stock/factory engine. I might was well just rebuild or buy a new. This can be a big price tag. Looking at some built engines with up to 300hp and a option of a super charger intake system.

I would look into sensors that run that side. The MAF, I think, would make the whole engine run funky. A plugged injector would make it run crappy. Check fuel pressure.

What kind of fuel do you run. cheap as you can find from the cheapest station, that only gets new fuel once a year. Do you run a mix of different stores, IE mavrike, chevron, texico, 7-11, etc. These have different fuel additives. I would think that running the same fuel from the same store would be a good thing.
