I own a 2001 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer. I noticed a buzzing sound coming from the engine compartment. I took a video and posted it up to youtube. Anyone got an idea as to what this is?

Also - I have that issue where the air suspension is getting filled and the air-pump gets REALLY loud. Anyone have any recommendations as to what I can do?

Thanks
Nick

Mechanics stethoscope is the easiest way to locate bad bearing. You probe near various pulleys to locate source of sound.

You can also remove accessory belt and check various pulleys by hand but this may or may not tell you where the issue is.

To confirm its one of the accessories or pulley bearings you can remove accessory belt while motor is cool and start it. You can run it for short time only as it will be running off the battery with no alternator and water pump will not be circulating water. But it should not take long at all to confirm if noise is gone or still present. This may require you to reset your ecu as it will likely set a code.

I have something that sounds eerily similar... passenger side front of the engine. Mine just does it on startup for a few seconds most mornings, or if I haven't run it in a few days while, maybe 30s or so.

I haven't worried about it too much, but perhaps I need to? I totally need to go buy a stethoscope so I can try to pinpoint it.

Do I need to buy a replacement part you think? Can this damage the engine/truck?

I believe he is saying the pcv valve has come out of the valve cover. Check about 1/2 way back on top of passenger side valve cover and see if pcv valve has come out. If so... simply push back into place.

I found the PCV valve, removed, put back and still have the same issue. I went to replace it and both the dealer and local store provided to me a valve that doesnt look like the original, actually a lot smaller... Will the one below work? This is what the replacement looks like. Do i need to replace the hose too?

mind me adding in but I would suggest using a motorcraft pcv valve and not the auto parts one, ive learned one thing with these trucks, the more parts that say motorcraft the better the engine runs.

The local auto parts store gave me that, but it looked REALLY different then the stock piece. My father has a body shop and ordered from ford the part and when it arrived it looked like the auto parts store. Its actually smaller then the stock part on my truck. Maybe Ill just buy it and see how it works.

It could be the IACV. Had one that was buzzing just out of the blue one day. You could check it by pinching the IACV hose a little as it will alter the buzzing.

Where is the noise the loudest? If it is the IACV it will be the loudest around the intake and IACV.

The sound is loudest near the firewall on the drives side of the engine (near the pcv valve). I don't hear anything near the intake though.

Did you mean passenger side? IF it is the drivers side where it is the loudest then i would definitely say its the IACV. The PCV is on the passenger side.

Engine noise

I just bought a 2000 with E.B. trim package and 184K miles. It has a normal amount of issues, but drove great. I have the exact same noise as heard on the video, but have also noted that after turning off the motor, the sound "spins" down. When driving, it seems to be less once you give it some gas, but comes right back as soon as you stop. When turning off the motor, it takes about 2 seconds for the noise to stop (like some kind of rotating item with a bad bearing that free wheels after the serpentine belt stops). It is on my list to investigate and i will report back if I can determine the issue. If any of you fine folks have an idea given the added bit about the noise continuing after the motor is turned off, I would love to hear your thoughts.
