Hello all,

I figured I would post and see if anyone here could lend a hand troubleshooting the no start issue on my parents' expedition.

It seems to just buzz when key turned yet all charged up, all lights work, etc etc .. I jumped the solenoid with my bro trying to crank and starter spins but doesnt seem to engage the motor from what I could tell ..

It had been sitting outside in extreme cold and freezing rain and now the random no start, truck has just over 100k miles.

I read about PCM relays on here but seems to be for the older generation trucks... any ideas?

Did the starter go bad? If the starter is buzzing while the key is turned, then the little arm that sticks out and engages the flywheel is probably broken. Try tapping the starter with a hammer lightly, as it might free the arm back up. Even if it does, I would still replace the starter. Don't want to climb under there each time...

Unless it's more of an electrical buzz, then start checking fuses and relays.

I think it was more of an electrical buzz, I only really got to pop in and troubleshoot for a few minutes before work but heading back tomorrow...

to clarify when I said "it' just seems to buzz I meant the truck, not the starter itself ....

great, thanks for those .. the comment before about the little arm on the starter motor may prove relevant, when I jumped the solenoid and the starter spun and spun but did not engage the flywheel, perhaps it does need a tap for the arm to engage?

I had to rem/repl the fuse box on my 03 5.4 due to the relay overheating and melting the circuit board. This was a problem for the newer 03. The buzz you are hearing could be the starter relay. This is the same indication I had when my car did not start. I changed the relay twice before the fuse box failed completely.

OK so apparently what happened was they lost the key several months back and had new ones made.... My brother had tried to start the car with the old key (they ended up finding it) ... and this set off the security system .. the kicker is now it apparently it has to be towed to Ford to fix this? ......d'oh!

you could try calling a locksmith that does automotive may be cheaper than the dealership and some will come to your house saves on towing but I am sure there is a charge for house calls or try disconnecting the battery and it may reset the computer
