So as in subject, late 2008 Expedition EL Eddie Bauer, 170k miles. Getting at the timing chain was straightforward, only three tricky parts (i) the battery tray has the washer reservoir attached and had to remove passenger headlight to get at connections/hoses, (ii) fan shroud was really awkward - lots of pipes, wires clipped to it, etc, (ii) the harmonic balancer did not have holes for a steering column type puller and had to use a three arm pulley puller - but besides that steering pump was easier than expected and all electrical plugs came apart without breaking.

The car was making a lot of clattering on starting (and slight clatter under load), the passenger side chain guide was destroyed/MIA and the driver's side had some breaks. Surprised that besides some gnawing on the inside of the chain cover there wasn't more damage.

I'm going through this vehicle before handing it off to my son, looking to make it ok for the next 25k miles/3 years - i.e. not putting back to perfect.

QUESTION 1 - there was some sealer beneath the bolt holding the harmonic balancer on, just a trace. Is there an oil passage here or something I need to be aware of when reassembling?

QUESTION 2 - the phasers look to be in good shape, nothing loose, plates are parallel with sprocket, etc - engine had no codes - am planning on leaving them alone. Does everyone ALWAYS replace the phasers or am I being stupid to leave them (and not have to mess with the timing).

QUESTION 3 - given how much plastic (formerly chain guides) is somewhere in the engine I intend dropping the oil pan and cleaning - anything else I should look at?

Thanks in advance for any comments,

Peter
