A family member fell in love with my Expy and wants to up grade from her Buick Encore to an Expy. Safety is biggest reason. They found a grey 2010 Expy SSV 4wd, 79k, clean vehicle history, good maintenance records and in very good condition: asking price is $12,800. I think she can work that to around $11,500.

What say the hive? I say go for it, but I am 800 miles away and can’t test drive it/look it over.

Very bad price imho.

Mileage IS very low but sheeeet.... the whole point of SSVs is you can buy them for 3-4-5-6k

Also expect to blow another $1k or more and a day on a full interior swap to get decent seats.

If she's spending 5 digits on a 2010, tell her to look at a Navigator

PS 4wd is not a feature afaik all ssvs come with 4wd, skid plates, steering column shifters with tow/haul button, no running boards, no third row

I kind of agree with adieu with my limited knowledge on SSVs. Where I live you can buy an expy in very good shape for under or around 10 grand. There is a 2008 pearl white limited for sale by me right now for a little north of 8k, that being said it’s got 160k on the clock. But the truck is meticulously clean in and out. But 7-10k is the average asking on early 3rd gens in Buffalo. An SSV is all base so that sounds a bit pricey but maybe not.

Have her bring it to a local Ford dealer for a full inspection. Most SSV's have been used very hard. Well worth the money to verify if there are any major issues.

The seller is a private owner who bought it from a Ford dealer in 2012 with 32k on it. Has had 17” premium rims, interior doesn’t look like the stripped down version. Didn’t see the shifter, so can’t comment on it.

Truck is in Connecticut, which has high vehicle prices anyways.

Has the optional 3rd row, xlt running boards, cloth 2nd 3rd row, full stock center console up front and no holes drilled anywhere.

Most, but not all SSV have column shifter, and most but not all are 4WD.

79K on a 2010 is pretty low and the asking price is a great place to start, so I think she found a good one pending inspection. There are plenty of XLT's that were government use, so perhaps the SSV nomenclature is being used in error. Of course the seller doesn't need to know this.

Wow. There's a '10 EL limited 4x4 near me, with 154k on it, and they're asking $14,900...

Been interested in seeing if he'd do a trade on my 08, but looks like the price would need to drop a fair amount, based on what y'all are saying.

Prices are different everywhere, this is a good example of a listing for my area. They are a dime a dozen in western New York but they’re great vehicles.

Keep in mind Connecticut falls into the salt belt and chances are the rockers aren't in the greatest shape if they still exist

SSVs arent pursuit-rated, not quite as much of a beating as general purpose police cruisers.... more stuff like fire marshalls, k9s, commander transport, and park services

Carpet or vinyl? Sounds more like an actual XLT, comfusingly SSVs come with XLT badging so a dealer used to flipping pimped out Platinums mightve gotten confused

SSV tends to mean:
Vinyl floors
Steel wheels
Black plastic trim on grille and mirrors
No console
Column shifter
Cloth up front, vinyl midrow
Basic radio w/cd
No trip computer just the one odometer display with a single button
No running boards

VIN declares it an SSV. I thought the same, so I googled the 2010 SSV ordering info and sure enough you can order all the features of an XLT in the SSV platform.

I lived in Northwest CT for 25 years, I’m not living in the south now by choice. I hear you about the rockers though, wish more people did proper basic maintenance (like washing your car after it snows, at a minimum spraying off all the slush-pack and caked on road-goo)

In NorthEast you can wash your car all you want, but your just driving right back through salt covered roads on your way home and it sticks to the clean wet truck... there is no winning the battle. You can’t wash it off either at home no hose can be left on when it’s -9 degrees out.

Having lived in Syracuse while attending SU I would say that upstate NY vehicles, especially 4WD ones, may have rust issues from all the salt they use on the roads during the winter. I had a Mustang in college and it rusted in less than two years of living in Syracuse. I was able to poke my finger through the rear fenders!

Yea there is a big difference up here with the salt. We aren’t afraid of rust like people in the south are though. There would be no used market if a little rust turned you away from a vehicle. By the time the vehicle is a year old the frames have decent surface rust.

A lot of people I knew from the area had winter beaters. An old 4WD pickup truck or 4WD Subaru used for four months of the year while the better car stayed in the garage. I would say that frame coatings have gotten better since the 1990's though.

I'm going to probably sound like a broken record because every time this comes up, I'll say the same thing: Krown Rust Control. They used to only be found in Canada but now their shops are finally making their way into the U.S. There's a Krown shop near my in-laws house in Port Huron. I have had my former Land Cruiser sprayed every year and when I traded it for my EL, the frame was perfect. Michigan truck, zero rust. It was a 1998 with nearly 300,000 miles on it and a lot of winter. Absolutely zero rust. They carefully drill holes in every single body panel and mist the interiors of the panels with their special oil. They spray inside and outside the frame, under the hood, engine compartment, literally everywhere. Then they snap plastic plugs into the holes they drilled and you're set until the next year. $129 a year is a small price to pay to keep your truck rust free. If you don't believe me that this stuff works, here's photos of my Land Cruiser just before I traded in:
