We are looking to replace our 2009 Expedition EL Limited with a 2016 EL limited. We love our Expedition, but have been getting some pretty serious noise from the cam phasers. I bought it used and have no idea how it was maintained before I got it.

Anyway, any ideas if there have been changes from 2015 to 2016? We use it for some pretty heavy duty trailer towing, so we are looking at the mechanical self-leveling shocks and looking forward to some extra horsepower and torque (as compared to my 2009 Expy). I haven't really seen any within driving distance with the options we want, so we will probably end up ordering one. We're not in any big hurry.

On a side note, does anyone have an Expedition with the ingot silver exterior and dune (beige) leather interior? If you do, how does it look? Is the carpet beige too, or do they use black carpet with dune interior? or, do you get to choose? I like the silver exterior and my wife prefers the dune interior, but we're not sure how they look together and not sure how it would look with black carpet.

I have a 2015 Expedition Limited 4 x 4. I do not have silver exterior - I have the blue jeans (navy blue metallic) exterior with the Dune interior.

For 2016, the only change is the additon of "one touch" buttons for the two, third-row power folding seats.

The carpet color for the Dune interior is black. The carpet mats and all-weather rubber mats are also black.

I also Sync 3 was a 2016 addition.

Thanks. I appreciate the info. So they do a beige interior with black carpet? I thought that would look a little strange...maybe its just me. My 2009 Expy has the dune interior and beige carpet. Seems to look a little more "coordinated", if that's the right word!

I actually like the black carpet with the Dune interior. I should have been more specific. It is black on the floor for the first, second and third row seating. The carpet color behind the third row seat (and on the back of the third row seat) is Dune (beige....). I use the black all weather mats year-round, so they blend with the black floor carpet.

I bought a new 1989 Dodge Grand Caravan LE with the beige interior, which included the carpet and mats. The carpet showed dirty VERY quickly.

Good luck with your future purchase.

Thanks for all the input! I know what you mean about the beige carpet looking dirty. My carpet doesn't look great, and that's with the Weathertech mats. I was kind of hoping to re-use them in the new truck, but they're beige. I mean, after spending almost $60,000 on a new truck, wouldn't want to spend a little extra for color coordinated mats, LOL!

We're replacing our 2004 Expy with a 2016 Limited. We couldn't find one locally (northern VA) set-up with 3.73 limited-slip axle and mechanical load leveling. Well, there were some around with those two options, but they were fully loaded, which we don't need for horse trailer hauling, feed/grain farmers' co-op runs, or weekly trash hauling to the dump. We ended up ordering ours three weeks ago, and just heard from our dealer we have an assigned VIN now, so the build is scheduled. We're getting Dune interior, too, but with White Platinum exterior. The Dune interior photos on the ford.com web site show dark (most likely black) carpeting, as others here have posted. Cheers!

2016 v6

I was wondering how 2016 owners like V6 ?? 2 more MPG helps some.

5.4 Has been bulletproof.

So far love mine. Not too many miles yet as I haven't even hit 3,000 yet. My wife's F-150 has the ecoboost and we've had good luck with it. You would never know it's a V6 by the power and acceleration. For the size vehicle it is, it handles very well. So far so good.

I think you'll like the 2016. I have seen some 2015s about in my town and they look real nice, ride smoother than the last generation too. I have gotten to drive the Ecoboost once or twice and I am impressed with it in every way as compared with the 5.4. Be sure to post updates and pictures!

My carpet doesn't look great, and that's with the Weathertech mats.

Not to thread jack, but I'm disappointed with our weathertech mats in the 2016 expedition with 2nd row bucket seats. The second row weathertech does not cover the center area between the bucket seats. You Have to buy the 3rd row mats that do cover that area between the seats. But I feel this seems backwards. That center area is going to get dirty, just as dirty as the 2nd row mat itself. I wish that could have all been the same piece and been cleaned as one rather than having to remove the 2nd row mat and the 3rd row mat also (PITA) just to clean the high kid traffic area around the two bucket seats.

End rant

So far (only a bit more than 1000 miles) we love ours, too. V6 EcoBoost is smoother than our 5.4L V8 was on our 2004, but still seems to have the power we need for our horse trailer. We're getting about 2 mpg better mileage so far, too, which doesn't hurt my feelings.

As for the rest: I'm not a fan of the electric-assist power steering, but guess I'll get used to it. The Sync3 loses its mind every once in awhile, and doesn't recognize power button on/off pushes, but after a vehicle off/on, it usually resets itself. The only other issue is the factory didn't do a very good job with final body assembly. When closed, the driver's door non-hinged trailing edge sticks out from the body maybe 1/8"-1/4" from the leading edge of the rear door. I kept thinking I'd left the door ajar when I closed it. Guess the person who put the "Proudly Assembled in..." blue oval on the windshield should've looked more closely at the final product. :gr_guns:

I have a similar issue on my '11, but in my case it's a design issues rather than an assembly issue. The bottom of the front doors sticks out further than bottom of the rear doors. The first time I noticed it I thought I left the door open. Then when I realized the door was closed, I thought the truck had previously been in an accident. Then I compared it to the other side and to other 3rd gen Expeditions and discovered that it was just a design issue.

Door hinges, strikers, and latches are very adjustable & super easy to do. A gap anywhere near 1/4" should have accompanying wind noise and water infiltration. With a little tweaking here & there, mine are all perfect.

And this time of year is the easiest to tell when one or more panel is out of whack - that grey snow & salt spray streaking down the sides from highway driving tells exactly where something is out of alignment. Keep in mind that the slightest of movement can make a big difference, so work slow. And if you think its the door itself - they bend easily too. Little knee here and pressure applied there, voila.

I haven't taken a close look at a 2016 to know if his issue is the same as on the other 3rd gens, but the issue I am referring to is simply by design. There's no gap; the bottom trailing edge of the door simply comes out a little more than the bottom leading edge of the rear door. It's on every 3rd gen, but some people may not see it without use of a straight edge.

I ordered and purchased a 2015 Expedition Limited 4x4. When it arrived and I picked it up - it had two miles on it. This was the first Ford I have ever purchased.

The left front wheel opening molding was installed crooked, with the black plastic nails on the inside of the wheel opening also crooked and not seated. The lower molding piece, at the rear of the left front wheel, was also installed crooked.

I bought the vehicle and had the service department repair the crooked moldings at the first service visit. The poor assembly was very obvious the first time you saw it. I can't believe the quality control inspector passed the vehicle at the factory and the dealer technician that was paid to do the pre-delivery inspection approved it also.

The obvious assembly flaws made me wonder what other problems with assembly are present, but can't be seen.

I do like the Ecoboost 3.5 engine power and smoothness, and I actually like the electric power steering. It seems "just right" to me. My family owns a 2014 Impala 2LTZ and the electric power steering is TOO light and numb feeling.

UPDATE: Now at about 6,000 miles, still liking this 2016. The driver's door misalignment continues to make me crazy, and sunlight bouncing off the super-shiny chrome shifter & surround in the console is blinding, but the only other real annoyance is the backup camera when shifting to Reverse. The camera always displays in the dash, but the alignment lines overlaid in the display only appear maybe 50% of the time, and almost never when I'm backing up to hitch up the horse trailer. The couple times the center line did show, it made hooking up the trailer a lot easier. Ah, well.
