I got this truck 2 months ago with 50k miles on it. About 3k miles later, I started noticing misfires or "pinging" in two situations: (a) when accelerating at highway speeds, like while passing, and (b) when climbing hills. Eventually I had enough misfires to trigger a persistent Check Engine Light, so I brought it in to find that I had a P0302. They replaced the the coil and the plug on cylinder 2, and it drove fine after that.

Now, 7k miles later, I'm noticing the same thing. I have a code scanner, but it hasn't happened enough to trigger the DTC, so I don't know which cylinder it is yet. But I imagine this will happen soon enough.

What's up with these coils/plugs? Should I just replace them all now? I'm at 60k miles - the manual recommends replacing the plugs at 100k, says nothing about the coils..

If it ain't broke don't fix it. My coils were at over 200k when I sold it. 100k is too long for the plugs though.

Yeah start with a set of plugs. And you may want to add a oil separator, or catch can.

Don’t need to have CEL to have a code. Especially if you have more than a basic scanner or FORSCAN.

will forscan work on 2007 5.4? Some sellers say it won't.

Yes, but limited functions. You can see codes, and do some of the maintenance functions, but not many changes.

I change plugs every 35k on my 16 (tuned, step colder 542s gapped at 0.028”) and 50k on my wife’s 16 (stock, step colder 542s gapped at 0.030) if you have a buddy that has a tuning device, I would recommend booking to up and seeing what kind of knock values you are getting. Could be a little more serious than just plugs/coils

thanks everyone for your advice and experience - it's given me some things to look into / think about.

so it sounds like the majority of expi drivers are doing fine with their stock coils, then?

by the way, here's a photo of the coil+plug that came out of cylinder 2 after the misfires at 53k. the mechanic said the discoloration was a sign of coil failure.

I had exact same symptoms as you in my 2016. I was given the advice to swap the coil from the misfiring cyclinder to another and see if the misfire followed it, but to go ahead and replace all the plugs and boots. I did this and no more issues. I had replaced plugs at 45k simply for maintenance and then one of the "new ones" cracked at 85k.

Thanks for this info! So you replaced the plugs and boots, but kept the original coils?

2016 Expedition EL,On a trip in the all day rian I had started to pass a semi up a long hill, got the flashing cel light, stumbling, and power loss big time. Kept driving and it cleared up. Next week during a full exceleration (got to have fun) same thing. All just before 100K. Replace plugs and no issues have returned. Now at 105K changing Trans, rear diff, transfer, front diff, and coolant. I purchased all from rock auto , make sure you get the real "FORD" parts. There are fake spark plugs out there!
I have been looking into an oil catch can and checking into intercooler moisture buildup.

Get a scan tool and use it right away next time.

Coils are covered under your 'emission warranty' and it's 8/80,000mi(all cars by law). Basically anything that sets off the MIL.

My client owns a Ford dealer, I have definitely had it looked at. Even had them program the the remote start with the new key fobs from amazon. I absolutely love this truck and will drive it until they stop making gas! LOL
I have all the scanners to work on this myself. Autel and forscan ect.. My car hobby is out of control at times.

Intercooler condensation collection was remedied in the 2014 f150, Expeditions from 15 on should not have that issue. As for the can it’s a must for the ecoboosts. The amount of shit that even a simple passenger side catch can collects is extremely impressive (jlt performance). I’m not convinced these 15-17s need a $400 upr system, definitely the old 2011-14 f150s though. The only real dirty side is the passenger side.

Easy way to check your intercooler is remove the lowest cold side pipe on passenger side of IC and see if any liquid comes out. You should not have any. Be careful with the “weep hole” ppl drill in IC as some ppl have reported losing boost pressure

I don't think that's true. The warranty guide says "The emission warranty coverage period is 8 years or 80,000 miles (whichever occurs first) for catalytic converters, electronic emission control units, and onboard emissions diagnostic devices. All other parts covered under your emissions warranty are warranted for 3 years or 36,000 miles whichever comes first". If you look at the list for "all other parts", it lists ignition coils and spark plugs. When I called up Ford Service when this first started happening, they confirmed that ignition coils would be covered under warranty.

Intercooler condensation is not completely remedied for the 15-17 Expeditions. Most of our intercoolers Do Not have the weep hole. There have been a few users here that drilled their own, and solved the issue.
