Passenger side floorboard area? Usually passenger side exhaust manifold... I have a leak on my 2010 5.4... Annoying.

Could also be a vacuum hose disconnected somewhere...

Hey Kev!

Does it do it all the time? When Cold/Hot?

If you go above idle does it go away?

Last time the oil was changed?

Also - what viscosity oil is being used? What type of oil filter. Is the oil level correct?

I own a 2015 Expediton Limited 4x4. Twice, the selling dealer’s “factory trained technicians” installed 5W20 oil in my engine (customer pay) and I had to make them change it and install the correct 5W30.

This being my 1st Turbo v-6, I had no idea what it was supposed to sound like. I thought mine was ticking loudly at idle. Then my neighbor had his civic si idling next to mine while cleaning off snow and it sounds nearly the same.

I wrote it off to a modern engine sound.

If it's a problem, it'll get worse and have to be addressed. In the 20,000 miles since I noticed, it sounds the same and runs the same.

Because of IWE issues with a friends F-150 they never could fix and issues discussed on this forum I purchased the Ford extended warranty for help if something fails. That keeps my paranoia at bay while reading the forums.

'17 w/ 60K miles, no ticking. Oil is always clean, truck on the other hand is nearly always dirty. It was a plus, plus that they washed it when it was in the Truck hospital a couple of weeks ago!

I think the OP’s issue is that it has gotten worse.

10-4 Brother! Keeping people safe and family come first. Upload the video or send it my way once you get it.

FYI - Kevin used to own a Diesel Performance Shop. He used to do all of the big work on my 250. He is new to the EcoBoost world. The Expy is his wife’s ride. Hopefully we can point him in the right direction.

i am not sure what you are hearing.
it sounds exactly like mine does at idle, maybe a bit more pronounced because the mic is real close.
but mine sounds like a machine with lots of moving parts, no odd harmonics or tick tock or odd balance
once mine is past its first warm up routine after start, 60 seconds, then its all quiet and rhythmic
i have had lots of diesels and this sounds nothing like those ticks or ping.
just my 2 cents

Jeff, I am pretty sure this was after warmup.

I am getting confirmation.

Confirmed. That was with the Motor warm.

Sounds exactly like mine even after warm up. I've put 21,000 on it since I purchased (had 29K) and it sounded like this from then. No issues with performance or gas mileage.

Do let us know if he finds out something is wrong with it.

I've got another 6 years and 75K miles on the extended warranty to remedy it.

I've been getting it serviced at Ford dealerships and none of them have said anything about it.

Ford released a TSB for clanking and ticking noises on 3.5 ecoboost engines due to cracked piston skirts. If it’s getting worse over time this may be something to look into.

Camphasers failures are also documented like many of fords other overhead cam engines (4.6, 5.4, 3.7). Just throwing out two items that are known noise causers on this engine.

Based on what JPExpedition said, I found it. Yikes!

SSM 47394 - 2013-2018 F-150, 2015-2018 Transit/Expedition, 2015-2017 Navigator - 3.5L EcoBoost - Engine Tick Type Noise From Cylinder Block

Some 2013-2018 F-150, 2015-2018 Transit/Expedition, and 2015-2017 Navigator vehicles equipped with a 3.5L EcoBoost engine with greater than 20,000 miles may exhibit a tick type noise from the cylinder block area. This noise may be caused by a cracked piston skirt. The noise can be isolated to a cylinder using a stethoscope or other suitable listening device. Canceling the affected cylinder will reduce or eliminate the noise. If the noise is isolated to a specific cylinder, it is recommended to replace the short block. If the noise cannot be isolated using the methods described, refer to the Workshop Manual (WSM) for diagnosis. A cracked piston skirt does not result in metal contamination of the engine or any related cylinder head damage. Prior approval for short block replacement is not required under new vehicle limited warranty coverage.
