2018 Expo VS 2021 Tahoe test drive.

After buying our 19 Max Platinum and seeing all the hype about the new GM stuff I was hoping I wouldn’t have buyers remorse. Seems I have no worries there. While I like the sound of a V8 (especially with a Corsa exhaust) over a 6 it sounds like the GM’s are slugs. While these aren’t race cars I would rather have more power and quickness than less. While the 6.2 is more powerful on paper it doesn’t seem to translate to forward thrust.

I didn’t really see anything in the various videos that made me wish I had a GM instead. Even the air suspension. My Grand Cherokee had it and I never really used it or thought it rode any better than anything else. It was nice when I did oil changes, I just raised the whole vehicle!

anyone notice to open the glass there was no handle? Have to touch the glass itself. Looks sleek, but...meh.

shifter is dumb. Location of drive modes is dumb. It also didn’t look like it actually had more room in the 3rd row. I can sit in the back of our Max comfortably and I’m 6’4”.

I read a review that getting to the camera is buried in a touch screen menu somewhere too. No thanks! Dedicated button like Ford has is much more convenient.

I’m still happy with our purchase. Now when the Grand Wagoneer is out I may not be so happy...we’ll see!

When we drove the 21, my wife had to page thru 4 pages of BS to find the camera button to turn it on. We both said WTF? So stupid.

That's 'cause the 2nd row seat positions are still fixed. I bet when you sat in the back of your Max, you slid the 2nd row forward a little... (The careful reader will note that this is where looking at specs on a piece of paper can be a little misleading. Because the 3rd row legroom number doesn't account for the fact that the Ford's changes based on 2nd row seat position, while the GM's is fixed.) I'm also shocked that GM kept the folding 2nd row which does not allow access to the 3rd row with carseats/booster seats installed in the 2nd row.

We slid the 2nd row seats in that 21 we drove....... I'd say the 3rd row leg room was identical to my Expo Max roughly...

I guess it seemed OK. I didn't look that close as I knew they fixed the floor height. It seemed similar. I could of measured closer, but honestly we rarely sit back there, so its not a real important thing. There was comfortable seating tho, I sat in it and wasn't cramped or anything crazy.

Goin off the reviews so far and yours(and anyone elses experience), the chevys 6.2l matches well with the 10sp and pulls well, some say its more responsive than the 3.5, some say less. The high countey has nice materials, but like the expy platty, not worth the 80k price. This is more apparent in the z71 trim and probably the other trims priced near 70k. Ive seen that the front seats, though comfy, are initially too stiff. The expy would easily be more comfy if thats true, every expy i sat in had near world class seats. Passenger Space is a wash. Ride and handling is also mixed. Some say the expy rides better, others say otherwise. Either way, with the air springs, its not appreciably better, which makes me think the coils would be kinda stiff or overly soft.

Btw, jeep teased the grand wagoneers interior(push button start and center console area). Im excited, thats the only other truck im checking for when i get back to the states, other being the refreshed expy/nav.

That review is just painful to watch, and multiple things incorrect. I can’t wait for a different review to compare. Maybe Redline Reviews and we can hear about the doors shutting haha

Not to mention that he is comparing the top of the line Denali to the 375hp engine as opposed to the 400hp Platinum. Coming from driving an Escalade for 10 years to the Expy (granted the Caddy didn't have the 10spd and updates), at no point has the Expy ever 'struggled'.

It was painful to watch! I mean how do you make a comparison of height based on the front edge of the hood? The ground clearance I found pretty difficult to find, not listed on any spec sheets, just brags about "raising 2 inches" which is great, but from what I can tell, it only has 8" of ground clearance (guessing then plus the 2"). Well according to the spec sheet, we already have 9.8" soooo guess it's not shorter, (technically .1" overall) just appears since the GM has a brick wall for a grill! Haha don't get me wrong, not saying anything bad about the GM, just the reviewer is pretty lame.

GM still refuses to put head restraints in any of their center seating positions. I will never buy a vehicle that doesn’t provide basic whiplash prevention for all passengers. We have 3 kids and often keep all 3 in the 2nd row, thus we will never own a GM unless they resolve this issue.

The GM 6.2L is ok at sea level but no match for 3.5L ECOBOOST at higher altitudes
N/A engines lost 3% HP & Torque for each 1000ft above sea level
Turbo engine produce same power regardless of altitude

Yep. 100% agree. All engines lose power at altitude.

Under light load a NA will see loss of power at altitude at any RPM across the board all the time.

A forced induction loses less.

The EcoBoost which determines Boost by requested Torque will make up for it under most load situations and make the same power at the same RPM as at lower altitudes. Only under high load will it lose power, and only at peaks. Under stock trim where there is A LOT of head room, it will lose very little.

We took my then new 2011 4x4 supercrew first gen 3.5 ecoboost on a road trip from Oklahoma to Phoenix to watch the Fiesta Bowl and then took a super random road trip home, Grand Canyon- Four Corners (lame) - then up through Colorado to see family. I had the cruise set and was blowing by traffic in the mountains in Colorado. The truck drove the same in the mountains as it did when at home! It was an eye opener, the previous F150 with a 5.4L was slugging and lumbering going uphill on a ski trip a few years previous.

Until then I was still questioning if a V6 was the right choice for a big, heavy truck. Eye opener!

The new 2020 Platinum Max makes the old truck feel slow.

In comparing Redline's reviews of an Expedition and the new Tahoe, while improved the rear seat seems to still be lower than the Expedition's leaving the seating position looking to be less comfortable. His knees are noticeably more raised in the Tahoe.

Test drove 2020 Expy and 2021 Tahoe at back to back last weekend. The Chevy rode and handled nicely but the interior layout and materials still doesnt match the expy for feel and workmanship imo. Was also disappointed to find out that GM still cannot figure out how to build an A/C system....lots of blower fan noise, very little cold air. The 5.3 small block is a dog compared to the 3.5 EB. Absolutely no comparison. (The 6.2 performs well no doubt but not really a fan of the muscle car sound in a people hauler.). Oh and that big ipad tablet sticking out of the dash just seems like a cheesy afterthought. The software is fine but the look of it is just stupid. The whole damned car just felt “tacky” compared to the “classy” feel of the expy.

We came home with the Expedition needless to say.

I have to say I had high hopes for the new Tahoe as a GM owner of the past. I literally found myself sitting there laughing at it.
