The manufacturing date was 5/17/2019. Mileage at the time of the oil change was 1100 miles. This vehicle was equipped with the trailer tow package which has the 400HP EcoBoost V6. The oil pan was metal and the drain plug was metal 15mm hex head unlike a previous version you may have heard was plastic. I thought it would take a long time since I had never attempted one of this type vehicle. The drain plug is accessed under the passenger side. The vehicle was hosted from the jacking points behind the front tires on both sides. I used two 6 ton jacks to stabilize the vehicle, each of which were situated under the front frame and a chock was placed under the rear tire on the driver's side. There is a baffle blocking access to the drain plug area which must be moved. There are 4 screws holding the baffle. The rear most screw on the passenger side should be only loosened so that the baffle can be moved after the other three screws are removed. I placed a wide mouth bucket under the drain plug after hearing that the oil will spurt out in a gush. First I removed the oil filler cap in the engine compartment and when I removed the drain plug I did not notice any difference in the discharge rate as any other vehicle I had ever changed the oil. I used the recommended oil being the Motorcraft blend 5W-30. There were no complications whatsoever. You should wait until the oil has completely drained before changing the filter (Motorcraft 500A) because as has been noted, the residual oil in the filter will discharge from the back of the front baffle and you will probably want to use your bucket to catch the oil from the filter.

Jealous of all that have a metal (screw) plug. The little yellow plastic plug on my 2018 is not conducive to draining the oil without making a mess.

I was also pleasantly surprised at the amount of space to work with around the oil filter. Someone with gorilla arms put the oil filter on my wife's truck (should be hand tight) and I had tons of room to work with my filter wrench.

my 17 Expy and my 19 F150 (both 3.5L) have the metal drain... Was the plastic plug a one hit wonder on the 18? I know the 2.7L in the F150 had it for a while, didn't think the 3.5 ever had it.

My April build 2018 has the plastic plug.

Theres a thread on the specific build does where it started and ended. The late 18's don't have the plastic oil pan with the plastic drain plug. I'm more concerned about the plastic oil pan than I am about the plastic drain plug itself!

my 17 was a Dec 16 build, my F150 was a Jan 19 build... I'd hate to have to rely on that flimsy tin "Skid Plate" for ultimate crankcase protection.

I strongly recommend full synthetic oil, I had my first oil change at 500 miles, alignment checked nitrogen in tires and a good once over.

I just received my Ronin Aftermarket drain valve for the plastic oil pan. It looks nice, I'll get it installed once I get some miles on this thing. I bought a case of Motorcraft oil filters dirt cheap on eBay. Its great because they fit all 3 of my 3.5L's! I dumped my original oil at around 1,500 miles. I've yet to do the second change on this Expedition, but when I do I'll put that Ronin drain valve in and report back about it! I sure hope my plastic oil pan starts leaking and warps in the temp changes here, so I can get the updated metal oil pan under the factory warranty. I can't see that plastic piece holding up to -30F air temps like we get many times a winter.

I strongly recommend full synthetic oil.

It’s hard to find the B1 spec full synthetic in my area. Wound up ordering it from RockAuto at a significantly lower price than I can get the MC blend locally, even after shipping costs. Same for filter.

just to clarify the tow package is not what gives you the 400hp, it is the platinum.

I’ve never understood the uproar behind the drain rate and the plastic plug. Remove slowly, not all the way, and let the oil drain out at the rate you desire. Once enough has drained, remove the plug completely and zero mess! Easy! :)

Thats exactly how I did my first oil change but I will say I had oil running down my arm and that some tried to spray out the sides as I loosened up the plug. Wasn't horrible, but I'm a neat freak and I hate having oil spilled all over if I can avoid it.
