Ford Dealer just told my all 2023 Expeditions must be ordered with Heavy Duty Tow Package.
Is this true? Are there orders being placed without Tow Packages?

What? The configuration doesn't show that. Did uou call other dealers to see if this is true?

I thought I would check the forum first. My trust of dealers is not too high.

It is a basic 4x4 XLT with 202A, special addition pkg, pwr fold seats, and no auto start. It would be a waste of money if tow pkg is mandatory.

I don't think that's right but you may want to add HD tow anyway. The 3.73 gears are well worth it. Much better low end acceleration and the fuel economy hit is negligible. Better resale too!!

There are posts in other threads on here saying that the tow prep package will not be available until sometime in the spring. Meaning that you either need to add the HD tow or wait for the parts for the tow prep or lower capacity towing capability. See the 2023 Ordering Timeline Thread for details.

A lot of buyers for an expedition do so to tow boats or RV trailers.
Much better on resale or trade-in

It's only a 795 option and will increase the resale value for almost certain. So why not?

I could be reading it wrong but I believe the XLT aren't part of it. "They have put a stop build on non-buildable combinations effective October 20th. Affected series include Limited 302A, 303A, 304A Timberline 501A and King Ranch 400A.." We didn't hear anything about this when ordering our XLT without the HD tow package.

HD Tow package is a no brainer to get. Most of the time in all manufacturers they add or upgrade the transmission cooler and radiator and sometimes the oil cooler. Just having this will in "theory" extended the life of the transmission and other parts.

The way I look at it is that is about 1% of the price of these vehicles. I understand the nickle and dime away the price, but the advantages (rear brake assist, digital cameras, better radiator, trailer brake if you ever do need it, etc.) are really worth it - plus as others have said the resale value is improved.

the differential on the HD tow is bigger/stronger than non-HD tow models. If you want to mess around with the power on these, having a 9.75" ring gear is better than an 8.8.

Agree with all of the above. Having the HD tow package for only $795 is a no brainer. I wouldn't buy this vehicle without it.

Is it a larger differential? Personally, I would get the HD tow package AND the eLSD option.

Yes, the HD Tow rear diff is a 9.75" whereas the non-HD tow models are 8.8. Housing and ring gear are larger. I suspect the axle shafts are beefier too.

One thing I did notice on pre 2022 Expedition models was that the rear springs are different on max tow vs. regular Expeditions - which is a good thing.
