My wife is a bit overly sensitive to exhaust smell, she can tell when I can’t.

But it seems since the last update (15.5” screen) the recirculate won’t stay on for more than 2 minutes. Anyone else having this issue?

it's not just the 2022's. It's all newer fords. At least from 2020, maybe earlier. Our '20 expedition did the same thing. Randomly go open vent from recirc, then back to recirc. A '21 F150 rental we had did the same thing. Maybe there's something in forscan to stop it, but i have no idea. obnoxious for sure because the air speed doubles, lol.

Yes, same on my 2022 with the smaller screen. It has always turned off in past years, but never this quickly. I'd have to time it on my other Fords but it's more like 5-7 minutes. In the past if you had the dash vents on the recirculate would never turn off, but haven't noticed if it does that with the 2022's.

I am having similar issues - I don't like the smell of exhaust and it will not stay on recirculate mode.

Found this in owner's manual:

Note: Recirculated air may turn off automatically, or prevent you from switching on in all air flow modes except MAX A/C to reduce the risk of fogging. Recirculation may also turn on and off automatically in various air distribution control combinations to improve heating or cooling efficiency.

It is 100% intentional, and not changeable with FORSCAN as far as i know. Part of it is safety related to prevent the buildup of CO2.
Definitely intentional and I think they made it turn off quicker now because of COVID.

What is your reasoning for this thought?
It's just an assumption, but I'm thinking rather than having stale air recirculating around and possibly carrying germs it turns off the recirculate sooner. Why else would they shorten the time drastically over the past couple of years?

Your assumption is wrong. The shorter time intervals started before COVID. The shorter intervals are based on several studies about CO2 buildup and it’s affect on tiredness and lack of focus while driving. Even small percentage increases of CO2 can have a negative effect.

Well definitely not doubting the C02 reasoning, i'm just going by the 5 fords I currently own ranging from 2017 to 2022 and the 2022 is the ONLY one that I've witnessed with a shorter interval. But anyway, you know what they say about when you ASSUME.

Two 2017's long interval
2018 long interval
2019 long interval (no longer have this one)
2021 not positive because it's my GT500 and I haven't really used the HVAC in it yet.
2022 short interval

Well I owned a 2020 Explorer, and wife currently drives the 2020 Expedition. Both have way shorter intervals than our 2017 Expedition and 2016 Edge. Both the Explorer and the Expedition were manufactured before COVID was a thing.

Our 22 we just got does it too and it's already a pain in the ass. Is there any way to change it?

I don't think there is any way to change it. I haven't checked the latest ForScan to see if there are any methods to defeat it.
I read a while back if you turn off recirculate and then back on, the car will no longer change the recirculate setting. I did it and my 2019 Platinum does NOT shut off in Auto mode. I always use auto mode and adjust the temp accordingly. I'm not sure about later year Expeditions.
What's odd is my recently purchased 2024 Honda recirculate stays on and never shuts off unless I manually shut it off.

Well if you run across a way, I'd appreciate it. We never use the auto mode in our previous vehicles, so we'll see how this one goes. It's a big change from a 14 Armada!

Bottom line, you should NOT run around in recirc all the time. It is not healthy. Obviously there are times when it is advantageous because of outside smells, but generally if you are using a good cabin filter it should remove most of the odors.

Here is an example of an excellent filter. I use Pureflow in all my vehicles and have for years. SO MUCH better than the factory ones.
