While doing a lower ball joint/upper control arm job I noticed that the last 3 inches of the coil spring on the bottom was cracked. This truck had original steering/suspension parts, 118,000 miles. Shocks are really bad, you can feel any bump or crack in the road. I'm looking for some less expensive struts, obviously I'm gonna need both the shock and coil spring. I had planned on keeping my existing struts for now and just doing upper control arms, lower ball joints, sway bar links, and tie rod ends as well as installing a 3" strut spacer to level the truck, but I really don't want to be putting too many miles on this thing with the springs looking so bad. The three nuts on the top of the strut tower are rusted and the studs are just spinning, so I wasn't able to get the strut out to do the upper control arm. Only solution I can think of is to get new struts and just cut the 3 bolts off the top of the old ones, then I can replace the struts and get the upper control arms knocked out.
So the question is, what are my options for some lower dollar struts? I haven't seen much as far as coil/shock combos for the expedition. Also, my leveling spacers are cheap $45 ones off ebay, if I'm getting new struts anyway should I forget the spacers and get those adjustable shocks instead? Just on a side note, what would you do if your top strut studs were spinning? only option I can think of is to cut them.
