Hi guys and gal (there has to be one), I had the start up rattle and valve tick going for quite some time and this weekend I decided it was time to take her apart. It is a 04 Lincoln Navigator 4X4 with the 32 valve 5.4. I thought it would have the 3 valve but whatever. Found 9 lash adjusters, one rocker, right side chain tensioner, and both chain slides bad.

Puting it back together I want to make sure I have set the timing right. after reading and getting confused by all the 11:00 and 12:00 and use this magic wand...

On both cams I put the key ways down and the chains have 7 links from mark to mark, basically same amount of links from keys and marks. Left hand side I have 30 links from big sprocket mark to crank timing mark and same on the right side.

Am I right? I'd like to know before I button it all up. I did rotate the motor complete around by hand and it went well.

I searched but didn't find anything.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I’m not familiar with this timing job, but photos would be extremely useful for those who do. It’s tough to understand this level of detail in text.

I’ll be watching this! I’m a$$ deep into my 32 valve right now so I will be interested in this topic!

I find this video helpful too since there isn’t a whole lot of 32 valve 5.4 stuff. A forum member found this for me.

He talks about the timing chain in part 2.

Fordtechmakuloco, did a youtube video on this motor. Brian replaced the timing chain and tensioners.
