Does anyone run this combo in their 2nd generation expy? I've been thinking about upgrading gears for better towing from the stock 3.73 gears I've got.

So regearing is not a common thing for Expeditions. However, I did regear my Explorer for bigger tires. I went from 3.55 to 4.56 on 33s. It’s basically the equivalent of factory sized tires with the factory option 4.10 gears.

It’s great. Around town it’s like a little gokart. In the mountains it isn’t phased by the altitude. On the open highway..... It did maybe neuter some top speed, but with the way my Explorer is built, 75 mph is plenty fast.

A change from 3.73 to 4.10 isn’t much of a change. It’s a pretty big cost for minimal change. I’d look to see if 4.30 gears are available for your rear axle. Especially if your tires are bigger than stock.

There are lots of gearing charts out there to help you determine the engine speed effect of different gears. I suggest checking those out to help you decide.

Running 4.10 gears in my '03 with 22" wheels and there is noticeable difference in low end to mid range acceleration without having to run at high rpms to run 75-80mph on the highway. Not much change in mileage either; used to get 13mpg around town before the change, now 12.5mpg. I made several other changes under the hood at the same time but the gears probably made the biggest difference. I would to it again in a heart beat.;)
