My 2004 4.6 XLT has about 230k miles on it. It's making some death rattle noises. I've already replaced the timing set due to the guides completely coming apart. My question is can I use a 4.6 out of a 2004 police interceptor Crown Vic? Both vehicles have a W for the 8th digit in the VIN. I know I would need to swap intake and exhaust manifold, but otherwise am I good?

Should. As always your going to run into something, a sensor in a different location, etc. But the bolt up should be the same. The fact your swapping in your old intake, and exaust manifolds should help. Might want to pop in stainless exaust studs while you've got motors out. Shame the bottom end went out after doing the timing set.

I bought it broke. It was a gamble. My profile pic is of the guides or what was left of them. I cleaned all the pieces out of the oil pan and took a shot. I've also got low performance on cylinder 4 according to a power balance test. I haven't run a compression test yet.

Sounds like the oil pump got all clogged up from the worn guide debris. We were just discussing about doing old school compression tests vs the balance tests. Do just #4 and see what you get, but I wouldn't gamble with a motor that's making noise. It could be a money pit. Pull the new chains and guides, and along with a new water pump just because, and transfer to the Crown Vic motor. Engines are like Vegas, sometimes you win, sometimes you leave broke, and a smile on your mug from what went on in your room!

here's a thought: rather than replacing the manifolds, I wonder whether it would be possible to take the computer out of the police car and put it in the Expy?
