When I turn the knob in my 99 Ford Expedition to 4H or 4L and start moving it makes this really loud nocking noise. I just got the vehicle at a good price for a hunting truck and I can't figure out what is causing this noise. Could Anyone Please Help?

usually you will hear the 4hi and 4lo engage... this usually sounds like a one time click or clunk... (take your pic...lol) but if it makes the noise more than once when it is engaged you probably have something messing up

if it is a continuous knocking sound while you are driving.. I would try to pinpoint if it is from the transfer case or front differential..

Also check the U joints on your front drive shaft. for that just grab the drive shaft with the VEHICLE OFF AND IN PARK.. and rotate the drive shaft back and forth there should be almost no play in the drive shaft..

If it is the transfercase.. be careful driving it.. if the chain has slacked at all it could slap through the case causing damage and/or injury

I do know that it is coming from the front of the vehicle. I listened to it over the weekend. It almost sounds like a grinding noise. And yes it is a consistant noise when I am driving. It makes the noise then stops and continuously goes thru that process. Will that help the answer a little better? I am trying to pinpoint the problem without taking it to a shop and paying a fortune just to figure out what is wrong with it.

if you can. jack it so all 4 tires are off the ground. put it into 4hi and listen to see where it is.

Do what panda suggests but.. Have some one in the cab foot ready to hit the brake just in case.. jack the truck up so that you have a sufficient amount of tire to ground clearance.. a mechanics stethoscope is great to pinpoint noises.. you can pick them up for a few bucks from any tool supplier..

Now that you say its grinding.. it could be your front wheel bearings too.. the added load and stress from 4 hi or lo could cause it.. Just start at one and methodically go to the other suggestions just listening until you find it.

mine gives a solid clunck when going 4h to 4l. its normal it transfer case locking up 4 yhe lower gearing from what im told. from my experience ive never heard a wheel bearing clunk, useualt theyll squeal when driveing. easy check is jack the front tires up one at a time and try to move the tire side to side ( in the direction as if it were turn left to right) it shouldnt have excessive play.
