Most rear end noises turn out to be any of the following: wheel bearings, carrier bearings, pilot bearing or spider gears.

Need a video with good sound for a better diagnosis.

Check the inner fender well and rear fender for indications of tire rubbing, wheel bearing play. Place the vehicle on jack stands and rotate the wheels while listening for abnormal sounds.

My guess is that your 4wd is not disengaging- even when in A4WD.

Mine did the same thing.

In the underhood fuse box, remove fuse 104 (could be 106- verify with owner's manual) and go for a drive. For me it solved everything. I then did the "brown wire mod". And in my 2000, I leave the switch off 99.99% of the time and just shift to 4hi when I want 4wd.
