4x4 switch

I was pulling my boat out in 4x4 mode as usual when I tried to switch it off when done the 4x4 light stayed on and now the switch doesn't do anything I checked fuses disconnected battery .when I start the truck up it makes a few clicking sounds in the dash I pulled the dash and there is a plug going into a grey part it clicks 4 times then stops . any help is appreciated thanks. I HAVE A 1998 EXPEDITION XLT 4.6

no one has ever had this problem. I took the switch out cleaned the inside now 4x4 light doesn't work but awd lights up but it doesn't engage but 4l engages I'm assuming the switch is bad .

mine is A4WD so i dont have a light come on. your AWD does not engage but your 4h and 4l engage? i know you checked the fuses but did you check all of them? sounds like a bad fuse or relay if your 4h and 4l work but AWD does not.

I have checked all the fuses inside and under the hood none were bad I turn the swith awd light goes on but its not enaging 4h does light up or engage 4l engages not everytime I try it and then when its off I hear the clicking in the daash wich is a grey colored plastic module wich a plug is going into i'm totally stumped I assuming its the switch since only 2 positions light up and only one works but i'm not sure the new swith is 73 dollars don't want to buy it if its not the switch .tha nks for the input.

try craigslist or a junkyard. you should be able to find them much cheaper than 73 bucks, maybe even ebay. does it go in and out of 4h/4l when you have it on? if so, could be a transfer case issue.

I did replace the switch no luck took to my garage they replaced the electric motor all fixed.
