Hello guys..

sorry for the noob question, but is it possible/good to install a turbo on a 2001 5.4 expy engine?

if yes...

what brand do you recommend?

what should the boost setting be set at? (psi/bar)

would it reduce engine life?

It'll be an EPIC waste of time and money... EPIC!!!

Go get urself a lightning or a f150 Harley, at least by then you'll have a half decent platform to get started on.... still a waste of time and money by then but not as useless as an expedition as the platform.

Before you asked that question, have you researched anything relating to what you wanted to know? If you do the slightest research you'll have your answer, the weight alone should be a giant red flag... the transmission... Well do some searching you'll understand what I mean

Have you done a search in this forum?

There's quite a handful of members that have done the Lightning swap to great results.

OP: do a search on Lightning forums for supercharger to turbo builds. And the mods to srrengthen the 4R100. The drivetrain in these trucks (the 4R100 and 9.75) is pretty damn solid.

I did a turbo build on my 2003 Lightning. You can do everything from make a 300-400hp nice daily driver with a single 62-66mm turbo and 10 psi of boost for example, or go crazy like I did with a midframe turbo that makes over 1000 hp at 24 psi.

The 4R100 and 9.75" rear axle are very robust in stock form, a mild build should not require any significant upgrades, just make sure everything is in good shape and replace any worn or broken components.

What are you trying to accomplish? Tow a huge boat or drag strip on hero night? A turbo will roughly make 1/3 more hp. A 300hp V8 will make 400hp at full boost. A super charger, can make close to that power and need little modification. Forced induction on a stock engine will probably shorten its life or kill it. It is very hard on head gaskets. The stock exhaust is not high performance and will defeat any mods.

to be honest i'm not trying to make a drag race monster... i'm just hoping to get that extra boost/power for the daily drive/use

You could if you have the 5.4 add a lightning supercharger to it. But as others have said adding forced induction to a stock engine will either kill the motor or shorten the life of the engine.

Absolutely not. Forced induction doesn't kill a motor. Not in any way. It's how the car is tuned and how hard you beat on it. That's what will kill a motor.

Isn't that the point of adding forced induction? You will be running it hard. On a 2001, that is like, an 80yr old man running a 100 yard dash.

Using a decent size turbo with a a/r of at least .83 on the turbine and keeping the boost around 6-8 psi will yield some decent torque increases right where he needs it-- in the midrange-- perfect for towing. And with a soft low end hit it won't put any undue stress in the rotating assembly

It depends on your purpose and how you plan to drive it. If it is indeed for a little more fun daily driving, it won't kill it at all, or shorten its life more than what it's already in for. Add a decent intercooler and run on low boost, along with a decent programmer/tune, and u shall be just fine and driving a pretty reliable truck while hearing some fun blower whine and exhaust notes.

With the 5.4, the low compression is perfect for forced induction. I just might go the way of adding a blower to mine and cruising on low boost myself. I'll be towing a race car so the extra power and torque should help make things a little easier. I would say check out some of the lightning or gt40 blowers on a 5.4. The installation may be much easier. I've never done it b4 myself but it is in my immediate future plans once I can at least get my race car in shape for these end of the yr races.
