Optical, sounds like your idle air control valve is gummed up. What you need to do is to open the hood and look behind the cover over the throttle body. On the passenger side, where the air makes the 90 degree turn down to go into the engine, half way down you will see a diamond shaped pad bolted to the side of the elbow with a round can sticking off of it (about 3" long or so by 1" in diameter). This is your idle air control valve. remove the two 8mm bolts holding the IAC in place and then disconnect the electrical plug. Using some carb cleaner, spray the insides of the IAC really good. If you can, place the 2 holes straight up and fill the IAC with carb cleaner and let sit for a few minutes then give it a final flush. Reinstall and see how things run for you then. I bet you will find that the engine will purr once again.
