98 2d 4wd transmission quit pulling

Driving down the road, transmission quit pulling all together.. no D R L anything. It's a 98 4WD. Transmission seems to have fluid, we had it towed and parked it and are going to go look at it today.

I know ultimately it is probably going to need to go to a mechanic, but what are some things we need to look at, maybe to see where we are and how bad off we may be?

It all depends on how much money you want to invest and the current mileage on the vehicle. You can expect at least $1600 for a decent rebuild plus install.

Nothing you can do if the fluid is correct since it is basically a hydraulic system.

Paid 700 for it, ton of miles... not worth spending more than was paid for it. I was hoping there might be something simple I was missing it could be (even though I doubted it).

Will double check it. I unfortunately don't know a lot of the history of the car other than it is a former police k9 vehicle, that has many miles on it.. 3rd owner, my better halfs son bought it off a family friend No clue when the last transmission service was on it or anything.

If you have the time, tools and clean work area, pull that bad boy out and take it apart. Can't make it any worse. Plus a kit is usually around $250-500 depending on what you replace.

There are a few videos on youtube, most are for manual trans. The basic procedure is the same except for the differences in trans/cooling and clutch.

With an automatic trans it is better to have a tranny jack than trying to balance it on a floor jack. The biggest thing to worry about is the weight. I have used my HF trans jack to roll a 2000 series Allison bus trans around the shop - that was a little past the max weight for the castors but it survived. Not a bad item from them.

I recommend having long extensions and air tools to speed up the process by saving the hands from the aches and pains.

You will have to jack it up high enough to roll the trans out on the jack or use a lift.

There is a recent thread on here about a member rebuilding his trans. I'll take a look and see if I can locate it & post a link later.

Here's a link to my rebuild. Its not current to what im doing right now, but itll get you going. Im going to fire it up tonight and see how it turned out. Its not tough to rebuild these transmission. Keep things clean, follow the procedures and it should turn out fine. Remember to put the exhaust back on before the trans mount crossmember.

My thought on the transmission jack add ons is they are junk unless you have the tires at least 14" off the ground. Anything less doesnt allow you enough room to get the trans under the frame and out from underneath the vehicle. The purpose built trans jacks are much better in the do it yourself application because they have some that reach almost to the floor. Allowing you the max room to get out from under the vehicle.
