98 Exp rear end issues w/ pic's

Just bought a used 98 Expedition 2 wks ago. About a wk ago it statred to drag in the rear when turning slow on corners or in the parking lots. I have did a lot of searching and found that it may be an easy fix with Friction modifier. So I put about 2 1/2 oz in and I asked the wife if it seemed to help and she was not sure. So I will drive it tomm and see if not, Do you recommened draining the rear and putting new lube and Friction mod in. I talked to a guy at the Ford dealer ship and he said the it need clutch packs redone and he est pice was 700.00. Any help would be great! Thanks

My rear end went out I think 2 years ago, and got a low mileage rear end from a salvage yard for about that price. If its your clutch packs and you replace them, I would tell the dealer where to go and find a smaller shop to do it for you. It shouldn't cost you near that, and you can buy a new limited slip differential (which is what contains the clutch packs) for like $300.

Mine has a similar issue- rear end 'grabs' on turns, almost like a stuck shoe. I sometimes smell something like a burnt clutch/brake after highway miles. I'm replacing rear u-joints, if that doesn't fix it I'll look at the differential. I have a limited slip 3.77

Well I know why it drags and hops on slow turns. I pull the rear cover off to change fluids and look at the gears.
The gears have been welded together!
Why would someone do this? Now it going to cost me an ass load of $$$ to fix this

looks like a side gear is missing a tooth. maybe thats why they fixed it cheap(welding) vs the proper/expensive(tearing apart rebuilding)

A lot of guys that offroad alot will "Lincoln" lock the rear end. It is the cheapest and easiest way to make it locked. It is horrible for driving on the street though. I would look into a junkyard rear end.
