hey everyone we just bought a 98 expo about a month ago and all was going good for it till about a week ago. First we filled 2 cans of free on for the a/c and it worked like a champ front and rear for a couple days now it blows hot. dont know where t ostart or how to look for a leak. then after that when we let the truck sit for awhile or overnight and then get in and start it up and let it run to warm a little once we put it in drive we can give it alot of gas and it barely moves. After about 10 minutes of this it works fine. the ow light (off) is flashing but it ran normal before with the light flashing. then we took our kids to school at noon then went to pick them up at 3 and the theft light started flashing and i tried everything in the bok to reset. turned out i needed a new key due to the Pats system. well anyone else have the same issue with the tranny doing the same ? any help or info would be appreciated.

1) a/c system has a leak. The tools to find the leak and fix the system yourself correctly will cost you close to what a pro will want to repair yours. How much repair work can you do yourself? When you removed the cap on the low side did you hear a hiss?

2) Sounds like it is transmission time. Depending on who you go to expect from $1600-$2500 for a remanufactured unit not including labor. I would venture a guess that the pump pressure is down until the fluid heats up. Never give a lot of gas if it won't move, you end up buying more parts that way. Blew a planetary gear set apart that way once.

How many miles are on it?

i think theres around 158.000 miles. is there anyway to get that pump checked out?it works fine when you drive in reverse and in the lower 1/2 gears it only happens when itis in D.

Sure, all good trans shops should have a set of pressure gauges for checking internal line pressure. The dealers have their magic box that will run it through all of the tests also. End result will be the shops are going to try and sell you a trans.

Another option is a used transmission from a wrecked expy. Only problem is you don't know the condition of the internals. Its a crap shoot, might get lucky and might not.

Is yours 2wd or 4wd? How much wrench turning are you able to perform?

Should you go that route also replace the torque converter, front pump seal and tail shaft seal. You'll need a decent tranny jack, flush the lines with new trans fluid. If it doesn't have a trans cooler now would be a good time to add one.
