You can determine that by using voltage drop testing on the starter solenoid mounted on the firewall. If you have 12v going in and 12v coming out of the big studs then you test the cable going to the starter. If you have 12v there then it is either the starter or the solenoid on top of it.

The starter has a solenoid mounted to it.

Most if not all starters will use a solenoid to operate the shift lever inside the starter. The lever is used to slide the Bendix or pinion gear forward to engage the flywheel. There may be a second solenoid mounted on the firewall whose only purpose is to control the high current side of the starting circuit.

The first pic is of a 1st gen starter circuit

The second pic is of a starter motor with the solenoid mounted

The third pic is of the starter relay which is mounted to the firewall sometimes it is also referred to as a starter solenoid

These components should be on all 1st gen expeditions

Well shut my mouth, I've always worked on earlier fords, and have never poked around my new/used SUVs starter. Looks like a smaller version of General Motors starter. I'll have to crawl under my truck more. Was his problem with the starter solenoid, or the firewall unit?

Well all you guys working on your expy's and f150's thinking about you as I pound down my Coronas at Lake Merced here in San Francisco. Rained real hard last night and is too cold to bolt up new rear calipers. That will have to wait till it drys and warms up. Cheers!
