Hey fellas. I was told by someone who I feel us pretty knowledgeable in all things auto that the factory alarm was better and had fewer problems than an aftermarket. I am interested in a remote start, hence the aftermarket alarm. He suggested going with the form remote start and just adding a glass break sensor. I was thinking about an autopage system adding a glass break, internal second siren and maybe a battery back up. Any thoughts or suggestions?

i run viper systems on all my trucks...absolutely love them! never had any issues once installed.

i put my first alarm on my explorer after it was broke into and the factory alarm never went off...still dont know how or why it didnt. had i had an aftermarket system on it..i would have been notified and stopped it. oh well...money well spent IMO!!

A properly placed and tuned impact sensor will go off long before the glass break sensor should a window be broken. If using a glassbreak sensor, I'd place it closer to the rear windows since most installers keep the impact sensors closer the the dash.

I don't usually recommend a backup battery either. If someone wants your stuff, they are gonna get it. No way around it. If anything, a self-contained siren w/ battery is the best... they would have to rip the siren out and smash it to shut it up.

Secondary siren on the interior is a decent idea. Especially if it is one of the piezo sirens. They are very small... but they SCREAM!

One of the best things you can do, is to get a long range 2 way system so you are notified as long as you are within operating range or opt for a unit with cellular communications. It costs more, but just about anywhere you are, you'll be able to get status updates or notifications from your vehicle.

I recommend an aftermarket alarm, and not just any alarm, get quality like Viper or Clifford. A couple of years back when the expedition was my moms, we were at a local fast food joint and some guys broke the back glass and stole her bag. The previous owner had installed one of those cheap alarms that taps into your factory system and it never went off. I am now looking into quotes for a new Viper system for all my vehicles.
