Hi all. Been lurking here and getting LOTS of good tips on a lot of work on my 1998 Expy. Figured it is time to pay it back! A few tips I kept track of as I went along withy the Monroe 90010 kit:
Soak all hardware before starting.
Mark your keyed bolts on upper control arms, so you can put them back the same and maintain your alignment. Had to pull them to fit the shocks in and out.
You have to evacuate the air from the rear air bags, by twisting the solenoid. Wear safety glasses, its going to blow road dirt all over the place!
Install the drivers side rear shock first. Because of the gas tank location I had to access the upper shock bolt from the other side of the pumpkin with a couple extensions across the top of the tank, and the Pass shock was hanging in my way.
The coil springs have a smaller radius on top than the bottom, the rubber insulator that came with the kit fits snug in the upper coil so thats a quick way to tell.
Have a bottle jack handy to move the axle that extra inch down to fit the new coil in, the trailing arms kinda hold the rear end up a bit too much. Once theyre in just jockey your bottle jack, and the floor jack under the axle, and watch the spring as it seats to make sure its where it belongs.
The instructions state to pull the fuse for the compressor, I figure the off switch is good enough. Im the only one that would mess with it anyway. The instructions also say to pull the warning light bulb from the cluster, which I will do when my ambition returns, meanwhile a piece of black tape will do.
Hope this helps someone. I am really happy with the ride which is stiffer but not jarring, the next test will be hooking the boat on the back to see what 4000 pounds will do to it!

yeah that passenger side shock is a fun one to change.
one of the first things I did to my expedition was get the 90010 kit and ive been recommending it to every one on the forum with questions on how to fix the POS factory air ride.
to decompress the rear bags my buddy and I used a sophisticated technique of sticking a knife in them hahah.

i am looking to buy the same kit.where did you buy yours from and how much did it cost? how long did it take and did you need power tools? the only thing i am worried about mostly is the ride height.and i also tow my 4000 pound boat as well. do you have and pics or videos to share? maybe post to youtube

i got mine form streetsideauto. but if i were to do it again i think i would go through rockauto
you dont need power tools
its 12 bolts,
14 if you need to take the bump stops off and stick a jack between the stop and the thing thats above it. but you wont need to do that, i needed to because i added 3" spacers. I also had to take off one end of my lower control arms, but you wont need to do that either lol
its pretty easy, all you need is wd 40 and a craftsmen wrench. Do your self a favor and the night before you do the swap soak your shock bolts in wd40 or pb blaster. it'll make the job much easier.
youll also need jacks, jack stands, and and patience.
Ive switched my rear springs 5 times... no joke, and once on my buddies 97 expy

what about the ride height? is it the same as the air ride

Chipete, I gained about an inch of ride heigth. My front pass shock was blown, rear air bags good but the stock gas shocks were both shot.
Real happy with the swap. Mine from Advance Auto online, $248.00 due to 15% discount and free shipping.
Expeditionary, how did you get the 3rd row facing rear? Stock or a mod? Reminds me of Dads wagon lol

Chipete, sorry didnt take any pictures during the process..kinda wish I had now, but was focused on getting the parts swapped!
I dont think the boat will be a problem, havent hooked it up yet cause its still snowing out here in the west. But around 400 pounds of tongue weight shouldnt squat her down too much I hope.

The mounts are the exact same distance from each other... If you know what im talking about. It just fits in both ways (ford just dosent want you to know that b/c the seatbelts wont work when the seat is rear facing)
Also, fun fact. The 3rd row of the expeditions is the back seat of an eddie bauer bronco. They didnt change anything, so you can do the rear facing in late model broncos too.

siince you have 90005 you have gas shocks up front instead of coil overs, your rear springs are also going to be 2.7-3" shorter (ride height).
Id go through whoever you bought the kit from and ask if you can return it for a 90010 kit.
I bought a 90006 kit instead of the 90010 kit (6 is for a navigator 10 is for expedition) i have no Idea why they are different numbers when they are the exact same kit, but I ******* to the company I bought it from online because I thought for sure the navi kit was going to ride lower than an expedition kit. When they told me the 6 worked on my 97 4x4 expedition... They refunded $150 back to my card of the $200 i spent on the kit. AND THEY DIDNT ASK ME TO SEND IT BACK!!! haha, needless to say I found out its the same kit and its still under my truck. (so i spent $50 on the kit shipped to my door)
You may be able to have similar luck since its such a PITA to ship things that heavy

What would work on my 2004 with air ride? And I heard there was no way to get rid of the message on message center? Is that true?

driver side shock (one by gas tank) is the one i was thinking of when I said the pass side is fun to change. Myself and wyo spent an entire hour just getting the top bolt off that ****

Yeah, that was not fun, lol. You can get at it 2 different ways:

1. Reaching across from the passenger side. Easier to see what you're doing but almost impossible to get the nut started with our non-air tools.
2. Straight up from below. Minimal room but we finally got things moving and got the nut off bit by bit. May have been easier if we'd taken the wheel off first.

yeah forget what I said if your swapping shocks, take the wheels off, if your just doing springs, you can leave them on but, even then, take them off lol. Its just easier.
SOAK the shock bolts, like A LOT!!!
