I asked this question in another forum but i got alot of mixed opinions. So i figured ill ask on this forum. My dad has given me some Amsoil 15W-40 engine oil for Diesel and heavy duty gasoline engines. I know the recomended is 5w-20, but ive heard of people changing weights. So my question is. Would it be harmfull to the motor if i add the 15w-40?

I'm certain the responses will be the same. From the link you provided on the other forum the answer seems clear. The formulation is primarily for diesel engines. If you want a definitive answer you should contact Amsoil directly.

If you live in the cold, do not use it. It is to thick for startup on cold days. If you live in fl like me, then you might be able to get away with it. I personally would not use it.

I've been using Rotella T 15w40 in my 98 Expy with no ill effects, and my bro has a 97 Expy and 98 Navitgator he runs the same oil and uses it in everything he owns year round and swears by it. I'm at a crossroad myself now after finding out about Amsoil and am happy with their 20w50 MCV product in my Harley and now considering the Expy for it to go in next. I'm leaning more for the 5w30 viscosity that Ford recommends though. They built the dang thing right? So what could it hurt? Mines flipping 300k really soon in about 150 or so miles so I'm not sure if I want to go 5w30 or 10w30 . I'm definitely going to run it in the wifes minivan next change for sure and 5w30 is fine for that. I just have never put an oil that thin in a truck and am conflicted with pulling the trigger. On another note if I don't use Amsoil in it,I'm sticking with Rotella T cause it is a great oil ,but might try the 10w30 version of it although I know the additive package is a little different. How different I don't know yet but they are both desiel and gas engine safe. I know they also got a synthetic blend T6 5w40 but don't know much on it either. Well there you go! I answered your question while posting a few of my own lol.
