That sucks getting such a nice '17 Expy smashed into.

I just got my 17 back from the Truck Hospital after being run into by a 20T dump truck! Mine was only grazed and nothing functional was destroyed!

My three children and I were also hit by a dump truck, head on 85 miles an hour impact. ‘15 KR Expy. My truck stopped the dump truck and spun it around parallel to us. That truck saved my family!! Thank goodness you and your family are ok. When I think I could save some wear, tear & rust on the expy by getting a "beater" 2nd car that's great on gas. I picture what an accident like this would be like in a Prius C or Corola.

Then again I also am an avid motorcycle rider. These more frequent accidents give me pause after 30 years of riding and the increasing number of drivers staring at their cell phones.

Wow, that is quite an impact. I'm glad you hear you are okay, but I'd have to say looking at the roof line and how much the firewall/dash was moved rearward, I'm surprised to hear the driver survived. I think you may need to be thanking a higher power, and not Ford on this one..

How did you determine the impact was at 85 mph? Which driver was determined to be at fault?

(I own a 2015 Expediton Limited 4x4 that I use daily with my two grandchildren in car seats.)

I had a similar accident with my 2010 Limited, except the impact was not nearly as direct as yours (more of a glancing blow as the other driver swerved to avoid me). As the body shop got into it, they removed the far back seats and found damage under them (floor wrinkled). No frame damage, but we ended up cutting out the entire right rear quarter of the truck and replacing it. The bill was a little over $10k. It looks perfect today, no paint or driving issues. I'd expect your repair bill (with frame repair) to be above $10k based upon my experience.

We were very lucky another inch to the right and the bumper would have hit my eye and squished me. People say god watched out. But really Ford did. I really own my children’s lives and mine to them!! Always loved Expys since 1997

Maybe I need to write Ford . Couldn’t wait and 15-17 Expys are next to impossible to find in Tampa under 45k! Driving a ‘15 Navi but just gave back a loaner ‘19 today due to my running board trying to eat your feet. I could settle for a ‘19 just can’t afford it. Of course the dt was poorly insured so we had to finance her .

FHP did because it was a 60 mph highway the dump truck never hit his breaks and I stomped mine when I seen light come at me. Says Fhp, even though she said Expy on the rear.
Also children in the back absolutely!! All airbags deployed and kept glass from falling on my babies, my six year old in the car seat had a slight concussion from impact, my eleven year old had some internal injuries the worst being a grade 5 spleen laceration that they were able to repair. It was from the seatbelts she’s so skinny it don’t hurt now for her to in a booster chair something I don’t make the mistake of not using anymore! My thirteen year old had severed nerves and broken collar bone his right arm is paralyzed, again seatbelt he’s 175Lbs and 13! Not much I could’ve done with him. He was in the back seat. All things considered we’ve considered ourselves quite lucky!

Florida highway patrol did the determination. I was air lifted I’m not sure of their methods. I know my husband said they knew I stepped on my breaks, and he didn’t. When I came too I apparently verified that I stepped on them as soon as I realized. He didn’t stop at all he was still hitting the gas.

They measure the skid marks and use a mathematical formula to determine speed taking into consideration road conditions/wear, tire condition and weather. Where there are no skid marks, witness statements and sometimes speedometers lock at the last indicated speed and data can be pulled from the vehicles.

That head on was a rough one no matter how you look at it! I'm glad you and your kids fared ok. That could have been much worse I'm sure.
I have to ask, 85 was the effective impact versus what the dump was traveling at right? If he were doing 85mph and you were stopped, let alone coming at him at xx mph, I think he'd have gone right up and over you.

THONOTOSASSA, Fla. -- A 6-year-old child is listed in critical condition after a serious crash that forced the closure of U.S. 301 in Hillsborough County.

The crash happened around 6:20 a.m. Wednesday on U.S. 301 south of Stacy Road, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release.

Investigators say 43-year-old Vladimir Carvajal driving a dump truck failed to see traffic had stopped ahead of him and crashed into the back of a Kia.

Lisa Davis, 53, was its driver. She suffered minor injuries.

Carvajal's truck continued on into the southbound lanes, crashing head-on with a Ford Explorer driven by 40-year-old Aimee Lopez, who was seriously injured. Three children in the SUV were hurt: a 6-year-old listed in critical condition and two others in serious.

Drivers were advised to take Florence Avenue to Fort King Highway to get around the crash.

I was going 60 the speed limit was 55, but I was going with traffic. I stomped on the brakes as hard as I could and they verified he didn’t hit his, so I think they added my slowed speed and 55 or 60 maybe he was speeding. That’s the way my husband explained it to me but I wasn’t able to handle all the information and wasn’t in control of the accident reports and stuff. If I come across it I can see if there’s any interesting details. My “tiny” expedition stopped him in his tracks imagine that!
