Last night, I shifted to from D down to 1 as I pulled into a driveway during a snowstorm. I could not use the shifting arm to change gears after this.

The arm can be pulled on (for shifting) and will not move without pulling. Moving the arm does not do anything to the cable down on the tranny. I can move the arm between D, 2 and 1 (but it does not actually feel like it is holding between any of the positions). I cannot move the arm to the N, R, or P positions. The tranny can be shifted by hand.

Questions:
  1. Is this just the cable or some linkage?
  2. Where should I be looking?
  3. Do I need to take the dash off to do this?

Thanks in advance!!

Oh yes, it is a 2000 Expy EB.

How to adjust the cable?

I tore it apart. The cable was broken, and it does not appear that the linkage in the steering column has a problem.

I ordered the cable from the dealer and can pick it up today. $70. So, the next question is: if I install the cable, how can I make certain that I have it properly adjusted? My Haynes manual just says "use special tool XYZ."

I don't want to put the cable in, only to have it grind into a gear, or pop out of gear when hitting a pothole.

Thanks for tips and advice.
