you may want to check all the wiring to the starter and also have the battery checked load tested
as this appears to be your first post on here it also helps if you were to post your year model and engine information that way we wont have to guess although 1st gen tells some information but depending on what year ford did make some changes in the wiring

Ground wire on the starter? The starter is usually grounded to the block. Is this one different?
Also need to check the battery voltage.

his profile says it's a 1998 4wd. I would guess it's also got the 5.4 since it's 4wd. but I could be wrong

his profile does say a 98 4x4 but that is all it says.
To say that because its 4x4 you guess its a 5.4 is just a guess
I had a 99 4x4 and it had the 4.6 .

My point was to post the information so people would know right off the bat and not have to guess or look elsewhere for information that the OP should provide. So many do that.

Sorry guys I was in a panic when I ask. Wife and kids were stranded and I was in the middle of 12 different things. Our expedition is a 1998 4.6l 4x4 vin code w and when I put the starter on the first time because everyone was stranded in a parking lot I left the ground to close to the main body of the starter it seems got it adjusted and starts fine now

Sounds more like your talking about the positive lead to the starter instead of the ground. The engine, starter, chassis are all negative ground on these vehicles. Having another ground wire touch the starter doesn't really mean anything. Now if we are talking hot wire touching ground things can get interesting in a hurry.
