been a while but I believe on a stock rim 33s will fit but might be able to go a tad bit bigger if you crank up your torsion bars..... others will chime in.... Thermo should know

The 70 and 75 is the ratio between the 285mm width and the height of the sidewall. So 70 is 70% of 285 and 75 is 75%, so on a 285 that 5% is about 14 mm difference in height. I think this is correct if I understand it all, but I may be wrong. This is just how I understand tire sizes to be. The first number is the width in millimeters and the second number is the ratio of the width and height. The third number is of course the size of rim it fits.

Victor

Edit: And if I'm not mistaken that 14mm would be on just the radius, so you'd get a total of 28mm bigger diameter.

DML Tire and Wheel Calculator

You can plug in virtually any metric size and get equivalent inches, from there you can also check in change in effect rear end ratio when you go to larger or even smaller tires.

For Instance- (General Measurements) Check the pic for a actual comparison of 265 vs 285 I also attached a 285 75 vs 285 70

285/70/17 = 33x11.22R17
285/75/17 = 34x11.22 R17
265/70/17 = 32x10.43R17

And, as stated before, most people generally run 285s w/o lift just fine.

1998expy, like was mentioned, the biggest tire that you can fit on your truck is a 285/70R17 and be garanteed no rubbing. Now, with that being said, some have managed to step up to 295/70R17's and been just fine (probably because they cranked the torsion bars slightly).

With this being said, I ran 315/70R16's (aka, 34.6x12.5's) for a month on the stock suspension. It drives down the highway just fine, but if you start to twist the truck up, YOU WILL!!!!!!! have rubbing. Granted, with a few mods, you can make them work. But the mods would be say a 3" body lift or doing the wheel well mod (ie, taking a 3 pound hammer to the back of the front wheel wells, yes I have done this to my truck, talk to me if you are contemplating this).

How adventurous are you feeling? Oh by the way, I am now running 37x12.5's with only a 4" suspension lift. This is as big as one can go. TRUST ME!!!!!!!! Going bigger will require far more modification.
