Anyone have any experience with body work on the aluminum panels?

Eating lunch today and a branch fell on my hood. Couple of gnarly dents with some paint cracking where the edge of the dent is. Just curious if that’s something I should expect the body shop to be able to handle or if I’m going to have to buy a new hood (which are on back order and $685).

Keep in mind I have the platinum white so I would think paint matching would be damn near impossible.

Uggg!!!! That sucks!
I do not envy you and I do know that day is inevitably going to come to most of us.
I don't have experience yet (thankfully), but I would be quite optimistic about the ability of good body guys. So much so that I would start with a quote from the paintless dent removal guys first, as long as the paint still looks good. You're correct, pearl coats and metallics never look right after needing some paint work. I'd avoid that like the plague.

I had a small dent in my driver's door. I went to a Paintless Dent Repair shop and they worked miracles! They completely removed the dent and didn't even have to remove the door panel. You might get an opinion from a PDR shop in your area.

Yikes! That looks worse than I imagined. PDR obviously isn't an option.

To help set your mind at ease, aluminum body panels are nothing new. Individual AI panels go back to Model T days. In fact Tudors and Fordors bodies were usually aluminum.

I'd have to see the backside of the hood where that goose egg is. I'm guessing its double walled, and if so, we'll be drinking beer outta that hood in a few months. Either way, with hourly labor rates the way they are and the body shop industry desire for quick job turn-around, replacement hood all the way.

JL1Z-16612-A is the Ford part number. Brand new one on ebay right now, $499 or best offer, with FREE shipping. Search item number 293091838301. Its in Sanna Tone, so should get to you fairly quick.

Awesome, thank you! And the hood is double walled, there’s actually a little hole in the bottom layer of the hood and I can stick my finger thru and push on the underside of the dent. Between both dents, and the fact that the pearlescent paint would never look right after an attempted color match, I feel like a new hood is definitely the way to go.

I'd expect them to blend the new paint into the 2 front fenders and maybe the A Pillar as well when they paint the replacement hood, otherwise the color won't match.

Any good body shop will blend the paint on adjoining panels to match the color. of a newly painted panel. The new hood will come unpainted and if you only paint the new hood, your eye will always notice the difference (even if its subtle) vs. the adjoining panels (especially with a metallic or pearl color).
