Yesterday my flowmaster stopped being a flowmaster. It got a little quieter and today I took it to a muff shop and they said I needed cats and that it would cost 1500. Has anyone else had this problem?

I have a 2000 expedition xlt 5.4 4x4

That makes no sense. If you needed cats that would mean your muffler would be really loud.

Unless they are melting and creating a blockage.. Magnaflow sells an entire catted mid pips for about $400.

If thats the case then he should cut them off and add some pipes, shouldnt cost more then $100. The $1500 quote is redunkculous

I'm confused. Before this happened my flowmaster sounded like a flowmaster now it just sounds like a stock exhaust. I just bought this expy two weeks ago. Yesterday it sounded like the noise level dropped. That dude who checked it said I needed them yada yada. I'm going to get a second opinion sometime tomorrow. What your thoughts on this

Does your state have emissions?

I'M not sure that I understand. I live in Texas it's required that we have cats

Well every state does but is it enforced? Here are your options.

1. If its not enforced then just cut the cats off.
2. If it is but they dont have emissions (meaning every year you need to get your car inspected for pollution) then you gut the cats, which is where they clean the inside of the cat so its straight flowing but still have the shell to make it look like you have cats.
3. If you do need cats. Like the other member said, magnaflow sales them for about $400.

Btw you gas mileage is being affected right now with stuffed cats.

Dang at least I'm doing too much driving. The magna flow price is that for 4 or just one?

Okay cool. I've seen mixed prices from 50 up to 300 dollars. So exhaust companies like flowmaster and other names make cats as well?

For a direct fit system from magnaflow there are 2 seperate pieces. Drivers side and Passenger Side. Each pipe actually has 2 convertors in it.

I am waiting for a call back from my Magnaflow Warehouse to see wht I can do for you. Did the exhust shop tell you which side it is?

The Magnaflow pieces are expensive at Retail. Who sells at Retail though. I can do them for $750.00 shipped for the pair. Let me know as I can have them shipped directly from Magnaflow in California to you.

As an ASE Certified Tech that scares the hell out of me. There is no way that all 4 cats are bad. The truck would barely run. When the chemicals in the cat break down, they melt and cause severe blockage. This would not allow exhust to exit the truck. Truck would barely run.

What could it be then? Could be the muffler itself? I don't want to start drilling into my cats and testing them just yet. It runs fine it just sounds not as loud and I'm not getting as much flow
