Hello,

I drive a expedition builds 2001 4,6 2WD drive.
I like to switch my spark plugs.
What is the easiest way to change it.
The last spark plugs are hard to change.
A friend told me, maybe dismantle the fire plate.

cheers

Dirk

Sadly - there is no easy way. You probably have to take off the fuel rails to get access. I replaced mine at the same time I swapped out my intake manifold due to a leak at the water crossover. But be careful as cranking on those plugs as they can cause you a worse headache if the threads strip a bit. I had 2 plugs blow out on my 01 5.4 after pulling out the plugs.

Their are many videos online that explain removal/replacement of first edition spark plugs. It's very critical due to a lack of enough threads in cylinder heads, to use a torque wrench on installation. They need to be torqued around 16-19 ft lbs, no more, no less. Read up on it, and then decide if it's a job you want to tackle.

I can't print them from my phone, I'm sure one of the other members will post a link for you. Just Google removal of 97-02 expedition/f150 spark plugs. Usually at least 3 or more videos pops up.

When I googled how to remove spark plugs 97-02 about 6 videos popped up. The front four on both sides aren't overly tough, it's the rears that require patience, and know how. Your going to need a 7 mm flex 1/4 inch drive socket, and a 5/8 sparkplug socket preferably with a built in extension. A retracting magnet is a good idea as well. I have 3 in my tool box, never know when you'll drop a bolt or spark plug. We here on the forum favor Ford/motorcraft replacement plugs, just seem to work better.

Didn't even know they made that. Where did you get the socket?

Hallo Dirk!

Was I sleeping too long? When did the Germans take over? I thought that possibility stopped back in 1945! Please guys English only on the forum. I worked with Germans for 6 years at the Harley rental Eagle rider, so some I understood, but don't do that, it scares the others.

The torque limiting socket came from Dr. Right Force on ebay, of course. Here's an example:
https://www.ebay.com/p/Fit-Tools-14mm-Dr-Right-Force-Fasten-Spark-Plug-Torque-Limited-Socket-us/1067648801?iid=252074953059&_trkparms=aid=555018&algo=PL.SIM&ao=2&asc=20150604093004&meid=88f9f9192cbb4d39a605f35c833e65f7&pid=100005&rk=1&rkt=12&sd=352287710077&itm=252074953059&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851

These were lifesavers on the 1st Generation trucks, as there's no room for any kind of torque wrench and if you get it wrong, the spark plug blows through the hood. My only fear was the Chinese craftsmanship would fail and I'd strip the three threads out of the head, but mine always served me well.

The 3rd Gen trucks leave you room for a torque wrench.

Go and buy this tool. I used it to do the plug change out on my '01 4.6l. I did not have to move the fuel rail at all. The job is not difficult as it is time consuming. The gearwrench socket is a must have.

Be sure to replace the COP boots when you do the plugs and use dielectric grease to coat them in and out. Do this and you will not have trouble with misfires due to moisture.

There are MANY posts here on spark plug change out.

I used a combination of the two above tools on my 2000, and just as Ronald says, it's not difficult but time consuming. The torque limiting socket releases at the proper torque, so you can't over or under-tighten the plugs. The magnetic swivel socket reaches each plug easily.

When I did my plugs I replaced all the COPs. Probably not necessary but the cheap ones I bought on Ebay were only a little bit more expensive than replacement boots only. I have had zero misfires with them after 48k miles. I think proper application of dielectric grease is more important than brand when it comes COPs.

Reading about COPs is a good idea when doing spark plugs at the change interval.
