I found a craigslist post a couple of weeks ago for the original subwoofer from a 2012 Expedition. I had the guy send me one for a reasonable price, and it showed up today intact. Apparently he gets these from limo conversions and has a couple more.

If anyone else wants one, send the guy a note at [email protected].

Now that I need to think about installing this and hooking it up to my aftermarket head unit, does anyone know if it is a powered sub, or if I need to add an amplifier? I need to disassemble the enclosure to figure it out, but it does have a 4-wire connector.

I take it didnt come with the factory amp mounted to the top of the enclosure. The factory sub has it's own little amp ( can be found on ebay if interested ) you will need the wiring harness if yours didnt come factory with a sub ( or make your own )
The 4 wire connection you see is because the factory sub is a dual voice coil. So if you are hooking up your own amp to it make sure you wire it accordingly.

That's what I'm doing. $40 for the enclosure with crappy OEM sub, plus another $40 for a decent Kicker sub on Crutchfield. For $80 it's probably not as good as the purpose-fit aftermarket sub that costs $600, but it will be fine for my purposes. Not everyone wants a visible sub box in the back of their Expy. :)

Im putting a 10" JL W3 with 550rms in the stock spot :)

Check your factory sub, IIRC they are less than 2" deep. Only aftermarket sub I found that would fit was something by earthquake...no thanks...:)

The 2012 factory sub enclosure will fit a 4.5" deep, 8" diameter sub, so I didn't need to spend much on its replacement. I've got a couple of teenagers, so the last thing it needs is 550W RMS, but that sounds nice to me! The kids will have to put up with just 200W RMS.
