check engine codes w/o scanner?

Guys,
I have a 2000 Expy. My check engine light came on but it runs great! Is there a way to check to see what the engine code is w/o a scanner? Nearest dealer is 50 miles, and auto parts is 65 mile.

If it is running ok for you then just order a cheap obd2 scanner. I bought mine from Harbor Freight for about 50 bucks. Paid for itself.
