I remember seeing a thread a while back where someone made a custom wire mesh grill out of some sort of chicken wire...or along those lines that they got at a hardware store. Anyone have any info or a link or pics?

I remember the thread you're talking about but I couldn't find anything but whatever you do don't use actual chicken wire unless your going for that backwoods hilljack look lol.

If you go to Home Depot I believe it's down the aisle with the fasteners and the steel and aluminum stock they have sheets of mesh and I'm pretty sure near the drywall supplies there is some also. I know a lot of people use gutter guard too which they also have at the Depot.

you want good stuff to use? this site has various styles of the mesh. install is pretty straight forward. you can use epoxy or even fiberglass. On my 300c show car i owned, i cut out all the slates, fiberglassed the grille to make it a deep dish grille then used the mesh to back it. looked great. its up to you how you want to do it.

I just found out that T-rex offers mesh sheets. Here's the link - T-Rex Grilles. I'm not sure if they are expensive than those you will see at local stores, but I think the T-rex mesh looks good and its finishing looks durable.

Wire Mesh and Grilles

I have seen some people use a strong stainless steel wire cloth material to make car grilles in the past. I believe they usually use something like a 14 x 14 mesh - ( Custom Wire Cloth - Belleville Wire Cloth Co - Cedar Grove, NJ ) in other words 14 wires per inch and 14 openings per inch.

The main thing you have to watch out for on these pieces of wire cloth is that the wire diameter has to be pretty wide. The wider the wire - the stronger the mesh will be and this way you will not be replacing the grill 50 times every year and it will withstand the test of time. I suggest using at lease .04 as a minimum for wire diameter when it comes to this mesh.
