Hello... I have a 1997 Expedition XLT 4x4 and have a question. I don't have the compass in the overhead console. Is it possible to install just the compass feature in my existing console? Are the wires already there or would I have to run new ones?

Thanks
:D

LandShark,

I have read posts where folks have NOT found the wires, but I think these posts referred to the wiring harness for the console itself. You should pull yours to make sure. The compass will have to be purchased, and it mounts onto the rear view mirror, so I suspect all you need is a power and ground lead to make it work.

Another item to consider (what I am going to do soon), is purchase a **** monochromatic rearview mirror. This is the type that automatically darkens when high beams shine on them at night. Ford buys from them for the Exby's that have this option, and they have the compass, map lights and temperature display all in the unit. Buy direct from **** or Summit Motors (only an example...I do not work for them), etc. I think it will be easier, and you will get more than buying the overpriced unit factory unit from Ford.

I thought the compass mounted in the small cupped area of the overhead console closest to the windshield not in the rear view mirror... Which is correct?

Is it 97-98 Only or am I missing something?

LandShark,

The display part does, but the compass itself is a round thingy that mounts on the attachment post of the rear view mirror.

I will try to take a picture of mine and upload (have not done this yet...).

Anyway, that is why I think the better choice, since you have to buy "stuff", is go with the **** unit. Check it out.

LandShark,

OK, I am trying to upload the pic, but where is the "browse" button to locate the file. It is not where the FAQ says its supposed to be.....

It's down below the text box and options section when creating a new message... Just above the "Submit" button...

LandShark,

I found it!!!!!! I have always used the reply section on the main thread page. The "Post Reply" button is what I will use from now on.

The picture shows the compass module attached to the rearview mirror. The wiring harness comes down from the headliner to the overhead console shown in your picture above.
