Just picked this truck up as a 3rd vehicle for times when I need something big. I was shopping for a pickup, but was honest with myself, and figured that the VERY few times a year that I'd actually need an open bed to haul something, I could rent or borrow a trailer and have vastly more carry capacity than a pickup!
That said, I did not do enough research into the 5.4 3valve. I'm no slouch when it comes to turning a wrench, but, this thing might be more than I have time to tear into, so I'm looking for a decently priced mechanic in the North Dallas area. I've watched a bunch of Maculoco's videos, and think that I likely need a full timing job as the truck has ~230k on it and I don't have any service history.
5 years ago (pre-kids) I'd have definitely dove into this headfirst and am pretty sure that I could have done the job (only a few crazy bolts that worry me) but it looks like a 30+ hour job, and I just don't have the hours in the day that I used to... I did call one place and was spitballed $3800-4200 for the job including a Melling oil pump. It was a Ford specialist shop, so I'm guessing that they'd do it RIGHT, but I'm also not super sure that I want to dump that much more into this, as the transmission also has a lot of miles on it.
The only other thing that is bad, is the burnt out contact on the under-seat electronic box for the heated and cooled seats. I tried pulling it out, but literally ripped the pin out of the board as it was fully welded onto the connector cable. I found a new box online for $200 which seems a bit steep, but here in TX, cooled seats would be a godsend!
