damn manifolds

so yesterday i started heading the manifold tick these friggin motors are known for. went to see if i could see where abouts on the maniflod it was leaking and found at least one broken stud. cant wait to deal with this one. any hints/tips?

You can remove the inner fender liners to give you better access to the manifolds. You could remove manifold to get better access to remove broken stud but you risk breaking more studs. Though I have heard others say they came right out once they had access to them!? Worse case you will end up drilling out broken stud and retaping. (PITA)

the breaking more is what im affraid of. is it possible that the leak is just from the stud and the gasket is ok? id rather just do the one stud to avoid more studs but dont want to have to go back and do it all over again

The quicker the stud is replaced the better the chance the gasket will seal. No guarantees if it is damaged yet or not..

You can try broken bolt remover and if that does not work drill out stud and retap. Not easy keeping drill centered in stud and heads are aluminum so.... Access is limited with manifold in place.

stopped at a shop for a price since i dont really want to risk screwing up the heads, guy said between 4-500 average for the job but up to 700 if the manifold is bad and all the studs break.

I used a small 1/4 drive socket 12 point [7mm I think] and drove it on the broken stud's nub with the manifold still on and it turned right out. installed a new one sealed right up.

mine broke off clean at the head so it will require drill and easy out at the least. just going to have the shop do it. truck has 95k on it and im thinking if one did it the rest prob arent to far behind so.

well dropped it off to get fixed. ended up having two broken studs that needed to get drilled out. ended up with about $60 in studs nuts and gaskets, $40 in taxes, and 8 hrs labor for a total of about $670
