Does anyone know how to remove the dashboard cup holder on a 01 Expy? The huge metal spring came off the back of mine and I want to remove it from the dash to try and reattach the spring?

Just reach in behind the sliding tray from underneath with your right hand while seated in the driver seat. With the tray nearly fully pulled forward but not locked into place, reach in and you will find two plastic tabs that serve as stops one on each side. Pull each tab down and pull the drawer toward you as you do each side to allow the tray to slide past them. You should do the driver side one first then the passenger side. Once you have pulled the tray past the stop tabs the tray will come completely out. There will be an electrical pigtail connector to disconnect for the lighter. And thats all it takes. Then when you are ready to put it back in, just align to the sliders and shove it all the way in. The spring is heat staked to the back of the tray.

Above was taken from an old post on F-150 forum. I pulled mine out after pulling off the radio/climate control dash bezel I just slid it open and removed it as above post says and the spring was laying in there. I ground off the plastic nubs and drilled/riveted the spring back on - works like new.

00EddieExpy Thanks for the info Just pulled mine also except the wire is for the ash tray light not the lighter on a 2001 also still have the problem as the spring is missing so now have to look in the you-pull-it yard for a spring
Not sure yet how the spring is attached but I have an idea and I may re-install with some expoy if it fits in the grove on the back of the tray
Could you possibly pull your and take a pic of how the spring mounts Thanks

Take a look at this link to the part on ebay - there are a couple shots that show the position of the spring, was originally mounted with some kind of adhesive that failed with time and heat. I followed somebody's post that used rivets to hold it on, now it should never come off again. I know the tray is slightly different but the rear/mounting situation is the same.

Same deal happened on mine. The epoxy lasted less than a day of use before it failed. I ended up running 2 short screws through the spring into the back of the tray where the plastic mounting pins were located anyway. That's been rock solid since.
