Looking for a replacement for our 2014 Escalade ESV, and with all the transmission issues the 15+ GM fullsize chassis SUVs are having, we are looking at newer Expeditions.

Did the 2020 model year address all the issues with Cam Phasers? I know anything 20+ will have a metal oil pan..........

Looking in the $55k range, which is darn close to a new one, but needs to be a MAX with leather, and just not much out there currently unless we go used.

Will likely be a MAX Limited 4x4.... I'll make sure it's under warranty, and plan to buy a 2-3 year Ford Extended warranty on it....

Thank you for any and all guidance!

I don't believe so, just being honest. I believe that the guts of the engine are exactly the same as any Gen2 3.5 for these. In fact, if they had fixed things, you would think the same "fixed" parts would be getting used in all of the thousands and thousands of phaser fixes going on. We've got numerous folks on here with 2+ phaser repairs.

My opinion, is it's a major design flaw that won't truly be fixed until a new generation of the motor. Don't care if the cause is "limited oil pressure" during start, that causes things to wear out, there are tens of thousands of engines out there, naturally aspirated or pressurized via turbo or SC's, that don't have this same issue. I'm personally surprised it hasn't spawned a class action or major recall event. If every expy/navi owner is eventually going to be without their car for at least 3 days, sometimes up to 2 weeks, at least once during its lifetime, consumers will exercise some rights at some point.

I feel bad for the service centers, they are burned out on this... My heavy tech said he was consistently working on 2-3 a week, alternating between them while seals were curing, etc.

With that said, I still love the way this thing drives. If I didn't I would have sold it a year ago.

Just an FYI, the 10R80 in these and GM’s 10 speed are the SAME transmission. Literally the same engineering team shared design. Only differ in some programming but hard parts are pretty much the same.

I cross-shopped a ‘19 or ‘20 Tahoe vs a ‘19 or 20 Expy. I came to the conclusion that there were issues with the Tahoe’s 6 speed, variable cylinder management causing other issues down the road resulting in engine failure, and some folks had major driveline shudder. The Expy has cam phasers and turbo waste gate issues - I can’t say if it is everyone or a certain percentage. I feel for those who are affected and hope mine is not. The Expy was also safer and had the independent rear suspension. What sold me on the Expy was the drive. The Tahoe felt choppy and tippy. The 5.3L V-8 felt sluggish off the line. I also felt like the interior of the Tahoe was not as functional - the second row doesn’t slide and I wanted a bench which was 60/40 in that car. The lift height was higher and the third row was tight. I really wanted to like it but it just didn’t feel like a complete package. The Expy had very flexible seating, more cargo space, better acceleration, better infotainment, more safety features, better crash test results, and was easier to drive. By a lot. Is it perfect? No, but I couldn’t find anything better and I am impressed with how solid this thing is. Both are good but comparing those two generations the Expy seems like a better pick all day. FWIW, my trade was an Acura MDX and I don’t miss it (thought I might).
